Firemen practiced hose handling hydrant attachment and gas saw use in a scheduled drill at a vacant house south of the implement business on Highway 81/92. The exercise, approved by the State Fire Marshal, aimed to train new members and involved twice rekindling and finally burning the structure to ground.
The April 7 Board of Education meeting at the high school approved buying land adjacent to the new building for athletic and PE use plus parking. They authorized a 20 day IBM typewriter rental, hired summer maintenance staff, rehired an office secretary, and accepted Honeywell bids to maintain thermostats. The group reviewed dishwasher repairs, teacher negotiations, custodial scheduling, salaries, and student disciplinary actions.
Nebraska ASCS officials and county leaders met in Lincoln April 15 16 for the Nebraska State ASCS Conference. Washington speakers included John C Foltz and Kenneth E Frick with William J Scherle and Howard Waters. the theme was Agriculture Now and in the Future with sessions on futures selling statistics one stop centers and credit. Polk County attendees included Paul Walgren F A Donelson Richard Sealey Jr Eugene Sterup and other staff.
The American Legion Post 91 of Osceola will honor the 20th anniversary of the first Revolutionary War shot with a sunrise ceremony at the courthouse on Saturday April 19. Legionnaires will fire a ceremonial volley to echo the Minutemen at Lexington 200 years ago. A Lee Boden car theft near Neligh was solved when deputies recovered the vehicle later Sunday. a 17 year old was detained but not questioned yet.
Osceola school invites all prospective kindergarten pupils and mothers to visit at 8 45 Friday morning April 25. Bring immunization records and disease history to complete the record. If you have a child entering 1975 76 call 747 3121 with name and birth date.
The Polk County ASCS outlines 1975 farm program changes including no land set aside, no acreage limits on wheat or feed grains, disaster payments for prevented planting or low yields, deficiency payments if prices fall below targets, and a $20,000 cap on total program payments. Specifics cover wheat and feed grains, with national and county allotments, target prices, loan rates, and disaster payment computations.
Dr John Sedlak begins his first week at a Utica dental clinic recruited by the Utica Development Corporation. A Osceola High School graduate of 1967 and University of Nebraska 1974 alum, he operates with one dental assistant in a developing two-chair facility leased from the Development Corporation. He will reside in a basement apartment above the clinic.
Osceola boys beat Shelby 63-54 in a cold season opener at Shelby after a postponed Polk County meet. Six firsts came as Steve Johnson swept jumps, Rich Hayes won mile and two mile, Ron Fujan claimed discus and shot, with several seconds and solid third places across events.
Mark Dahmke son of the Chris and family from David City and formerly Osceola resident won first place in the engineering division at the Greater Nebraska Science Fair in Nebraska City on April 5 for a bionics design. He earns a trip to Oklahoma City for the International Science and Engineering Fair mid May plus merit certificates from the Air Force Navy and Army and the Hawksworth Memorial Scholarship to UNL College of Engineering. The award totals 2250 dollars.
Mrs. Carl Frahm, 85, died April 7 in Lincoln from multiple sclerosis. She had resided at Milner Manor. Private funeral services were held at 10 a.m. April 9 at Metcalfe Funeral Home. Burial followed at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Gretna.
Osceola Lions held a noon meeting with fourteen attendees. They sponsor a blood pressure clinic on May 4 at the high school auditorium and moved to sponsor a bike safety clinic. Dr Stephen Kuhnel will open a dental office in July.
In a continuation of the April 6 meeting the Osceola City Council issued building permits to Vern, Johnson and Otto Daum after approving bills and warrants. The panel rejected offers on lots in the 600 block South Main and introduced deed delivery resolutions for District 19, Harlan Rowan, Maxine Winslow, and Tillman Joy before adjourning to May 1.
Sunday afternoon Mrs. Truman Bachenberg Ruth and Rachel took Rev. Bachenbergs to Pawnee City after days visit. Monday Rachel with her mother visited the University of Kansas at Lawrence to begin music therapy classes next fall.
