About 90 young walkers from Osceola to Polk joined a March of Dimes fundraiser on Highway 66 despite 40 degree wind. The effort supported polio and birth defect research while recalling early pioneer spirit and rural community solidarity.
April is Cancer Control Month proclaimed by the President and Congress. The American Cancer Society conducts its annual educational and fundraising crusade during the month. Volunteers may call on residents and seek support for the cause. The Sword of Hope emblem highlights the program.
Pioneer Mental Health consultant Ron Welch met with Shelby school staff in late March on school based mental health clinic roles. Kathy Hottman and George Hanigan join the clinic, with services available through Polk County Mental Health at 747 6791.
The Polk County 4 H Timely Topics Public Speaking Contest will be held at Osceola Methodist Church on Monday evening April 28 at 7 30 p m Open to 4 H members with two divisions Senior for those turning 14 by January 1 and Junior for under 14 Speech length five to eight minutes for seniors and four to six minutes for juniors Winners go on to the district contest in Fremont in early May Ribbons and special awards are provided by Radio Station KFAB.
Corey Becker, son of the Lee Beckers and a seventh grade student, topped 35 Osceola youth in the 1975 MOD Walkathon by walking 20 miles from the Polk County fair grounds to Polk. He will receive a $25 savings bond from First National Bank for his first place. Nearly 90 walkers from all towns in the county started at 8:30 a.m. and the first group arrived in Polk in just over four hours. The Osceola team lists participants and pledge per mile donations ranged from one cent to 25 cents, with final MOD fund expected to approach $900.
A lone, steadfast figure battled for a government reflecting Chinese tradition while striving to restore a social order worthy of the nation. His enduring convictions earned him respect as a symbol of a people seeking renewal.
Osceola High School juniors Christine Kresha and Dave Herrmann were chosen as 1975 Girls State and Boys State delegates by William Wolfe Post 91 of the American Legion and its auxiliary. The weeklong sessions at the University of Nebraska Lincoln cover government civics and citizenship with a mock election. Alternate delegates are Susan Bryan and Rob Sterup. parents listed as Mr and Mrs Kresha Mr and Mrs Hermann Mr Bryan and Mr Sterup.
The Upper Big Blue NRD adds a poster contest for ages pre school to sixth grade with the theme Conserve Our Soil and Water Resources and an essay contest for grades seven through twelve on Natural Resources A Heritage for Future Generations. Entries are due by April 30 1975, with forms available at SCS offices in several counties and the NRD office in York. The NRC Speech Contest for grades seven to twelve requires forms by April 17 and speeches on April 24 at the York County Fairgrounds. Dr W F Monson begins as field supervisor for the Bureau of Animal Industry serving Polk Nance Merrick Howard Greeley Boone Wheeler Garfield Holt Antelope Pierce and parts of Madison and Platte. The Nebraska State Association of Mutual Insurance Companies held its 78th annual convention in Lincoln with discussions on investments and administration. Myron Jones and Carleton Anderson of Osceola attended.
Polk County farmers can gain future income by planting trees under the 1975 Forestry Improvement Program. The program provides 75 percent cost sharing for ground prep, trees, planting and weed control. A service forester will create a management plan and assist until trees are started. Areas as small as one acre with 400 black walnut trees or three acres with 1200 mixed species qualify. Wildlife habitat is an added benefit. Contact the ASCS office to apply and have a service forester arrange a plan.
The Festival of Fabrics will be held at York City Auditorium on Tuesday April 15 with booths open 12 noon to 8 30 p.m. Education displays cover sewing clothing construction home furnishings and heritage arts. University of Nebraska specialists will be on hand for consultations and demonstrations run 1 00 to 8 30 p.m with a 50 cent door fee.
The IRS will mail 78 million tax rebate checks starting May 9 with most returns receiving $100 to $200. About 67 million taxpayers get rebates only, while 11 million receive combined refunds and rebates. Maximum rebate is $200, reduced by 1 percent of income over $20,000 up to $30,000, with married separate filers capped at $100.
