Osceola residents balance civic and social events with church and fraternal activities. The annual firemen benefit dance and a house burning incident follow by an American Legion Auxiliary Children and Youth Tea. A Bicentennial Quilt on display, wagon train arrival planned, and a special shoppers weekend announced.
Mrs. Bob Moore showcases Yugoslavian egg painting at home. Kathy, raised in Cservenka during WWII, crafts hand painted eggs with oil paints taking days from shell cleaning to satin varnish. Easter traditions noted alongside health item about Edith Smith’s transfer to Clarkson Hospital.
Osceola community calendar lists events from April 15 to 23 including doll show at Historical Society time change, youth tea at Legion Aux, Mental Health clubs, Stoner Club meeting, Beulah Cemetery Society dish, Easy Aces program, and local club activities. Lions Club meeting notes honor Mary West donation and Bernie Gissler’s drafted son Robert by the Miami Dolphins.
The American Legion Auxiliary to William Wolfe Post 491 will host its annual Children and Youth Tea at 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, in the Legion Clubrooms. Co chairmen are Mrs. Hubert Girard and Mrs. Richard Wyman. The public is invited. Proceeds support children and youth projects. Guest speaker is Harris Van Oort from the Nebraska Children's Home Society. Displayed will be items made by members including clothing for the Children's Home and quilts, lap robes, and pillows for the Veterans Home.
In a First United Methodist Church Easter reflection Truman Bachenberg recalls Paul’s final race and faith. He urges believers to celebrate renewal in Christ who overcomes sin and death and to seek new life through Easter joy and prayer.
Gissler an OHS graduate and SDSU senior was one of three linebackers drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1976 NFL draft. He will report to rookie orientation in Florida the weekend of April 23 25 and graduate May 1 with a mechanical engineering degree after serving as Jackrabbits defensive captain last season.
The National Bi centennial Pilgrimage Wagon Train visits Polk County on Friday April 23 with authentic replica wagons and riders meeting at Osceola and touring the area. Officials invite locals to join, with a chuck wagon dinner at the fairgrounds and a 40 minute theater show by Pennsylvania State University.
About 225 attendees gathered Friday evening April 9 at the Shelby Legion Club for a Polk County Democratic banquet. Notables Ed Zorinsky of Omaha Hess Dyas of Lincoln appeared with Hans Jensen of Aurora and testified candidates for U S Senate Jim Hansen and W Holly Hodge for Third District Congress, plus Erwin Matulka for Nebraska Legislature 23rd District.
The OHS banquet occurs Saturday April 24 at 7 p.m. in the downtown gym with Randy York, Lincoln Journal and Star prep sports editor, as featured speaker. York is a Uni Nebraska journalism graduate who has six years on the Lincoln paper and played basketball, cross country and track at Alliance High School. Advance tickets are on sale through Monday April 19 via the pep club or the school.
The University of Nebraska Lincoln announced a one year Regents Scholarship for Christine A Kresha senior at OHS and daughter of the Glenn Kreshas The award covers resident tuition for the first academic year recognizing outstanding scholastic achievement.
Osceola girls track won the Fullerton Relays scoring 50 points to take first, with Wood River runner-up. Key wins came from 880 yd relay 2:00.3 and 880 yd medley 2:10.1, while Vicki Kucera set a school record in shot put and led in discus and long jump.
