A 1976 winter storm left Nebraskans without power for hours, damaging lines and a high school. Osceola endured 48 hours of darkness, while rural areas faced irrigation losses. Volunteers and residents rally, with fundraising for the Fire Department and hopes for spring amid recovery.

York County Extension Service hosts a multi county Bicentennial Festival at York City Auditorium from 11 00 a m to 7 00 p m with over 50 heritage arts and demonstrations in spinning weaving dyeing rug making tool work and more coordinated by Bernice Metten brink and Clara Lawson. Admission is 1 50 at the door and lunch from 11 00 to 2 00 in USO Room.
Northern Natural Gas Company will issue gas cost credits to Cengas customers in Shelby Osceola and 35 other Nebraska communities starting in April. The average residential heating bill is expected to drop about six dollars over 12 months plus seven percent interest.
Polk County publishes a two part soil survey guiding farmers ranchers buyers and planners. The report includes a county narrative and a soil type map designed for broad readability to help conservation and land use decisions.
The chart lists C H S honor roll seniors and juniors with honors and honorable mentions, followed by a discussion by Doehring on soil surveys aiding crop planning, ranching, home sites, flood and erosion concerns, and southeastern Nebraska land use decisions with Douglas County cited as having published surveys.
Osceola area sees minor bus car collision on March 17. no injuries, damage to bus rear and car about 1000 dollars. An April 2 stray steer collision on Highway 81 near 81/92 intersection injures no one but car sustains several hundred dollars in damage. Soil survey plans aim to map Nebraska in 12 years through SCS and UNL cooperation.
A March 29 1976 blizzard hit a 16 county area in southeastern Nebraska leaving Osceola without power from 830 p.m. Monday to 830 p.m. Wednesday. Ice laden lines fell as poles snapped. Generators aided the sheriff hospital and rest home while crews worked 12 14 hour days to restore electricity across Polk and neighboring counties.
The Fifth Annual Grand National Mixed Bag Hunt and Conservation Day will be held in Columbus Nebraska. Silver Creek Civic Club and Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce announced the joint event with Columbus taking over for 1976. Clarence Arment named General Chairman and Jim Jaworski Publicity Chairman for the Columbus program.

Kivett announces spring opening dates for branch museums at Crawford Neligh and McCook starting April 1 Fort Robinson in Crawford opens daily Monday to Saturday 8 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 5 pm The post marks 102 years as a major northwest Nebraska tourist site with the 1874 Guard House adjutant’s office where Crazy Horse was fatally wounded and the 1905 Post Headquarters housing the central museum
Reservations for the Polk County Home Extension Club tour to Omaha on April 14 are still available. One bus is filled, a second is half full, and if needed cars will be provided to accommodate all who wish to attend. The trip includes craft demonstrations at Lee Ward’s, shopping time, and a performance of Under Papa's Picture at Westroads Dinner Theater. Cost is 14.05 dollars, paid in advance.
Death notices report Mrs. Rachel Hanshew age 92 died in Mission Texas with services pending at Kepner Roberts Funeral Home. A memorial service for Mrs Walter Herrmann is tentatively set for April 14 at Osceola Cemetery, following her death in Berkeley California. Further details will be provided by Kepner Roberts Funeral Home.
