Wesley L. Kennedy of Osceola:left Osceola High School and joined the navy last September. He trained at Great Lakes and Campaign Illinois in Diesel courses, later stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, and is now reported in North Africa at age 17.
Delmon Peck of Clarks and Florence Witzel of Fullerton wed at the Methodist parsonage last Monday morning. Peck serves in the Naval Signal Corps at Treasure Island California and his bride plans to accompany him there.
A Polk County chinch bug survey by O S Bare of the Entomology Department and County Agent Ray L Cruise finds fewer pests than last year with isolated damage possible. Bare notes many church bugs died over the open winter and predicts generally less trouble ahead. In city elections only 82 votes were cast with no ticket contest. John Malek and Robin Sigler won seats on the city council and Raymond Kepner and Dwight Bush prevailed in the school race.
Sunday visitors included Mr and Mrs Albert A Gabriel and family and Mr and Mrs John Gabriel from the valley plus Mr and Mrs John Hiemer at the Leonard Hiemer home. Guildes hostesses at Shelby parish hall. Mrs Gerhardt Lux won the door prize and Mrs Ernie Coufal won the Pinocle high prize. The Beebe family from California visited Raymond Beebe, and Leonard Hiemer and son visited John Gabriel’s home Friday evening.
George W. Engelhardt 78 and longtime Polk County resident died at his Osceola home after a brief illness. Survived by two sons Arthur and Paul of Corpus Christi Texas and daughters Mrs Ed Schnasse and Lydia Engelhardt. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church and burial followed in Osceola cemetery. An obituary will be published next week.
The annual high school essay contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary announced winners at a Wednesday convocation. The theme Mak ing America Strong was judged by local officials with Donna Pratt, Marjorie Warwick, Bill Norton, and Dick Mills receiving one dollar awards. Donna Pratt’s essay was chosen as the best and advanced to the state contest.
The High Prairie Ladies Club gathered Friday afternoon at Mrs. Ralph Kahler’s home with twenty members and one visitor. They quilted and arranged boxes for local soldier boys and enjoyed lunch. Several local residents were mentioned visiting or moving to nearby farms and towns amid weekend activities.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Huddle ston son Wallace and daughter Doris Ann visited Grand Island and brought little Ted Drum to spend a few days with his grandmother Mrs Huddleston. Mrs Ramey Whitney and children from Lincoln visited Shelby at the Bemis home. Mrs Lawrence Drovwal underwent an appendectomy at David City hospital last Thursday. Henry Johnson and two daughters from Lincoln visited relatives in Shelby Osceola. Robert Kuhnel of Camp Gruber Oklahoma spent furlough with his parents and relatives. Mrs A J Merrick and two sons David and Thomas and Mrs George Samson of Fremont visited Shelby and returned Sunday evening.
Wayne Stever, recently inducted into the army and stationed at Fort Leavenworth, has been reassigned to Fort Benjamin Harrison. Elton Wichberg and Gerald Wickberg are on furlough with their parents in Columbus. The Wickbergs, former Stromsburg residents, attended local schools before moving. Other locals visit relatives and news notes cover travel to Omaha and Tinker Field Oklahoma City.
The Churi School at Greens Chapel holds a worship service at 11 00 with a sermon on The Offering of Young Womanhood after the 10 00 service. A group of youths will then travel to Aurora for a sub district young peoples league institute following lunch.
Mrs. Alvin Redd visited Clarks for days with ill kin. Andrew Wrkoski family near Genoa visited Stanley Galas. Jay McCormick returned from Chicago. Carl Bryant family from Hastings helped Mrs. Hamilton celebrate birthday. McCormicks from Stromsburg visited Dakes. Meachams and Nelle Wisely returned from California. Ladies Aid to meet with covered dish lunch at Hall. Darnell family moving to Jim Gilbert place. Riverside program drew a full house Friday.
District No 18 reports visitors and social stops at local homes near Silver Creek and Columbus. Guests include Mrs Chet Wells and parents Mr and Mrs Adolph Bernt, Annie Cerny, Mr and Mrs William Hood, and Mr and Mrs Seberger plus extended visits to Kearney and Omaha. Local farm work and chick brooding also noted at Ciias Coffin and Adrian Micek farms.
Dale E. Davis, Polk County youth and Shelby High School 1931 graduate, joined the armed forces June 15 1942. He serves in Nashville Tennessee with the infantry as a machine gunner and has been chosen as company barber.
Mrs Leona Dawes and son Neil visited Bassett Nebraska last month. Alfred Kuehnal visited Emory Kuehnal home near Shelby for Kathleen’s ninth birthday. Dora Trued and Henry Krough from Omaha plus Axel Anderson family stopped by. Elias Timm and A J Herrmann were guests Sunday. Mrs Harry Oman returned home after a Gothenburg visit. Osceola Farmers Union Local meets Monday with high school program. Farmers plowing winter wheat in area. Writer found a six ounce Leghorn egg nine and a half inches long and eight and a quarter inches wide.
