Marianne Abbuhl born December 24 1866 in Bern Switzerland came to Nebraska in 1882. She married Edward Grossnicklaus in 1887 and lived in the valley then Hackberry precinct. She died March 27 1943 at Osceola aged 76 with two daughters and four grandchildren surviving. funeral was at the Methodist church with burial in Osceola cemetery.

A Victory Gilt Sale held in Osceola attracted 186 bred gilts sold by 11 Polk County farmers. Prices ranged from 46 to 91 dollars with an average of 61 dollars. The sale, sponsored by the Extension Service Swine Improvement Committee, featured plans to aid farmers in locating breeding stock and supporting increased hog production.

Sheep Shearing School Planned for Osceola April 9 10
Polk County will hold a Sheep Shearing School at the Osceola Fair Grounds on April 9 and 10, with 16 farmers enrolled. County Agent Ray Cruise says about 100 head of sheep are needed and that farmers bringing sheep may have them shorn free. Paul McDill of Dawes County will assist. The Sheep Association annual meeting is set for April 9 at 8 p.m. at the Osceola Hotel.

A Cozad man was fined $10 and costs by County Judge Merrick after pleading guilty by telephone to a speeding charge. He was picked up near Shelby last week by a state patrolman and was to appear in court Monday. he said he would mail a check.

Osceola’s Staff Sergeant Edw J Zelasney named among twelve Nebraska men for outstanding aerial action in the African and European theater of war. He earns oak leaf clusters to the Air Medal for 10 sorties over Germany, son of Mr and Mrs Chas Zelasney living north of Osceola.

Franz Bernt 87 dies after long illness in Columbus
Franz Bernt a long-time Polk County farmer and Columbus resident, died in Columbus last Tuesday after a six year illness. He would have turned 88 on Thursday and is survived by three sons, two daughters, a sister and a brother, plus numerous grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Andrews Church with burial in the local cemetery.
