Three Hewitt brothers from Monmouth Osceola and area enlist and serve in the Navy during World War II. George H Hewitt trained at Great Lakes and Morehead Kentucky, later on the Lexington in the Pacific. Gayle E Hewitt completed Osceola High School in 1942 and reports as still in the Pacific area. Harold Hewitt volunteered in 1942 for Panama Canal work and now serves as a Navy engineer at the Canal Zone.

Copper wire is available again for farm buildings and extensions to existing houses may be approved. The Polk County office has assisted three farmers to obtain permissions to purchase a bathtub and a water unit for farm houses. Cream or milk slips for dairy subsidies must be submitted by May 31 for January February and March. Applications for lumber focus on breeding houses hog houses barn and chicken house repairs.

Mr and Mrs Nels Thompson of Shelby now in Omaha received a telegram announcing the death of their son Carl in Iwo Jima on February 27 He was a Shelby High School graduate class of 1943 and had served in the Marines for about a year and a half He is survived by his parents and a sister.

Husband of Osceola Girl Killed on Iwo Jima
Second Lieutenant Donald E Mueller of the Third Marine Division was killed in action on Iwo Jima March 14 1945. He enlisted September 4 1942, was commissioned September 30 1944 and went overseas in November 1944. He married Kathryn M Huston on October 23 1944 in Los Angeles. Mrs Mueller teaches in Hooper Nebraska High School.

Obituary: John Walfrid Oberg of Osceola Dies at 71
John Walfrid Oberg born October 12 1873 in Linkoping Sweden died March 30 at Immanuel Deaconess Institute Omaha at 71. He came to America 1910 opened a Osceola blacksmith shop for 30 years and remained active in metalwork for nearly six decades. Survived by children Anna Olson Ivar Oberg Rev John Oberg siblings in Sweden and Illinois. Funeral conducted at Lutheran Church with Rev Franzen. interment in Osceola Cemetery.

Navy Lt Denery Killed in Chesapeake Bay Plane Crash
Lt. H. H. Denery of the U S Navy died in a B 26 crash over Chesapeake Bay on March 28 while on a routine flight with his commanding officer and two enlisted men. Only the commanding officer's body has been recovered. Denery served since 1939, stationed at Norfolk and is survived by his widow Frances Schnasse and a 15 month old son Sumner Patrick. Mrs Denery and their son and Frances sister Miss Mary Beth Schnasse arrived in Osceola to visit relatives.
