A letter from Mrs. Della Johnson of Denver reports her son Lt. Ralph Johnson, pilot of a B 17, has been awarded the Air Medal with five bronze stars and two silver stars, plus an ETO with two stars. He has been overseas for some time.
The county requests interest for a second edition of the 1943 Polk County boys and girls in the service booklet. A permanently bound volume with about 350 pictures could be published this fall for around one dollar. Reserve a copy by sending a card. no deposit required.
Polk County joins Nebraska counties eligible for government corn purchases. Advance price 88 cents per bushel for No. 3 or better with moisture under 17.5 percent, no interest, no sealing fee. Purchase period ends May 1, 1945. Delivery by Sept 30, 1945 with payment of the OPA ceiling difference. Farmers may liquidate corn loans and sell under new rules after retesting. contact the AAA office for details.
Mrs. Robert Davis left Tuesday for San Monica California after a month with her parents Mr and Mrs Emil Duke. Levert Oquist, a marine recently transferred from South Carolina to North Carolina, returned home for a two week furlough. The Fairview Ladies Aid plans a Wednesday meeting at the Hall with a covered dish luncheon.
Edward Schnasse Prim and Mrs. Schnasse visit in Illinois while Oswald Bernt's son Oswald Jr. is reported slightly wounded in Germany. Ninth Air Force cites Lt. Bud Deeds for extraordinary aerial achievement near Rheims on August 9, 1944. Francis Urban trains boats in Chicago. Billy Wyman notes promotion to Sergeant and three months in combat from the Philippines.
Richard BE Smith Wayne Wiese man and Arthur Wieseman three Osceola servicemen spent Easter Sunday together. Smith and Wiese man were at Keesler Field Mississippi and Wieseman attended radio school in Gulfport Mississippi. Walter Calhoun Jr radioman aboard U S S Pensacola is home on convalescent leave after a minor Pacific action wound staying with his parents in Wahoo and with the Wieseman family.
A letter from Eugene Reno, a German prisoner, describes a Christmas filled with Red Cross parcels including turkey and plum pudding. He notes letters from home, a Christmas tree, and updates on servicemen: Richard Smith completing basic training at Biloxi and heading to Lowry Field. Hubert Russell Mac instructing welding on a dry dock at Tiburon. Elmer Berger and wife visiting for furlough. Kenneth Almstrom moving from Hawaii to a West Pacific fighter base.
Nean McKeag Cpl Lawrence Anderson and Mr and Mrs Gordon Fredrickson visited the Howard McKeag home Tuesday evening. Mrs John Hiemer joined Oswald and Emma Alt to Colum bus Thursday to see sister Mrs Frank Thelen at St Marys Hospital. Home Study Club meets Loretta Buse home April 12 with officer elections. Frank Medinger of David City and Hershal Reisdorf hosts for dinner. Emil Hambek joined Edmundt Bernt for Omaha trip. Graff Polly and Herman Richter family visited Krumbach home. Raymond L Vrbka recently earned the Purple Heart now at a Florida rest camp. Melbourne Heibel of Columbus and family visited Gustafson home. Carl Richter family and Sophie Walford and son visited Richter home.
Mrs. C. R. Fsanz suffered a broken leg just below the knee and Phillip Sack's son sustained severe facial cuts in a two car crash on a country road north of Osceola Friday evening. Both are reported recovering at St. Francis Hospital.
This week end Food Centers observe the 16th anniversary of the founding of this popular organization. The company uses space to announce a special sale for Friday and Saturday. Since coming to Osceola, Food Centers have built a large following and become a community asset.
Laurence Meister of Osceola sustained two broken bones above the right ankle when a tractor ran over him last Thursday morning. He received first aid at St Francis Hospital then had the injury set in Omaha. He returned to Osceola hospital Saturday evening and is recovering well.
A Shelby gathering brought together relatives of Polk County service men held as prisoners of war. Chairman Mrs. S. D. Evins introduced Red Cross official Miss Elizabeth Gernes, who described Red Cross prisoner work. Attendees shared prisoner experiences and hardships faced by captives.
Jim Fasbender, a Shelby produce man, is hospitalized in St. Francis at Osceola with broken ribs and facial cuts after a late Saturday night truck crash a mile south of Shelby. Sylvester Glatter, riding with him, was uninjured as about ninety cases of eggs were scattered and the truck was a total loss. Jim was the first Blue Cross unit member hospitalized.
More than 90 city and rural teachers attended a Polk County Educational Association meeting at the Osceola Methodist Church. Ray Rice spoke, introduced by Supt. W. R. French. The Osceola girls sextette, Sandra Schumann, and Frances and Florence Schott performed during the evening.
A telegram reports the death of 47 year old Donald Brazee who was accidentally killed Monday at a mill in Klamath Falls Oregon. He left Osceola Nebraska twenty years ago and is survived by his widow two children his mother and several siblings in Osceola and near Shelby.
District 18 residents share visits with neighbors near Columbus Rising City and Shelby. Families attend dinners and weekend gatherings while district members are asked to bring usable clothing to the schoolhouse on April 23 or 24.
Harold Harris Denery was born in Portland Oregon on June 21 1916 and died March 28 1945 in Norfolk Virginia. He served as a naval aviator after training at Pensacola and held assignments in Corpus Christi and Norfolk. He is survived by his widow Frances S Denery and son Patrek, plus a brother sister foster mother and sister and many relatives. Funeral services were held at Kepner Funeral Home and he was interred in Osceola cemetery.
The Osceola Project Club met with Mrs Hazel Brown for the final session of the year. Plans for Achievement Day on April 24 at Osceola. St Francis Hospital Auxiliary meets next Monday at 8 p m at the schoolhouse. Osceola Garden Club hosts Mrs Gunnard Peterson April 17 with talks by Nelle Wisely and Miss Fannie McCray. Stoner Club meets April 18 at Myrtle Marak with Sue Cook assisting. bring Red Cross materials.
District No 68 reports social visits as families including the Alt Gabriel Burritt Grossnicklaus and Staroscik groups attend suppers and a music festival. Harold Grossnicklaus hosts, while Swan Bernt journey to Lincoln on business for a day.
Rodney Anderson 17 leaves Omaha April 3 to join U S Naval Training Center Great Lakes Illinois. Jack Baker reports Galveston Air Base moved to Colorado Springs while Pvt. Stanley Cypcar transfers from Ft Leonard Wood to Ft Leavenworth. Hanson Sterup funeral held in Gresham with luncheon guests.
District 54 Red Cross chairman Mrs. C W Cannon reports 95.75 from patrons. Mrs. Sam Wyman of District 23 reports almost 50. Emmet Benson and sons visit Nellie Benson in North Platte. Lloyd Wamsley hosts visitors from York IOOF Home and C E Wamsley. Junior Wamsley notes he remains OK on Iwo Jima. Wendell McCormick and Billy Wyman send letters from fox hole and the Philippines respectively.

Frank Thrasher, 45, longtime manager of the Red Cloud telephone exchange for sixteen years, died Friday after a stroke. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and three sons. The thrashers formerly lived in Osceola where he led the Lincoln Tel Co.
Swede Home Myron Johnson family of Stromsburg spent Sunday with Ame lia Fredrickson. Donald Hanquist Frank Bolton and Clarence Bolton were Sunday dinner guests at Ralph Rhoades in Benedict. Gordon Fredrickson spent weekend with William and McKeag at Shelby. Hiram Tewell family visited Frank Bolton in Benedict.
District No 7 reports Joe Schott and Werner Johansen traveled to Omaha on Tuesday. Cpl Alois Shemek departed for Louisiana to visit friends. Meta Deeter is quarantined with scarlet fever. Only five pupils attended school last Wednesday due to a snow storm. Miss Genevieve Schott of Lincoln visited over the weekend with the Schott family. Miss Leona Shemek of Hastings was home Sunday. The last PTA of the season will be held at the schoolhouse Tuesday with families asked to bring a program number. all are urged to attend.
Mrs A P Carlson and Harlan Toline families visit relatives in Grand Island and Denver. Bayard, Omaha, Sweden Home, and York residents join gatherings with Hanson Holm Carlson families. Local personnel travel to Omaha Central City and Stromsburg for reunions and furloughs.
Mr and Mrs Barthold Baack and family of Hampton join Mr and Mrs Leo Wurtz at H G Brauer home for dinner in honor of Brauer's birthday. Gilbert Benson and son dine with Leo Wurtz. C E Penrose and son travel to Wichita for time with relatives. Pvt James Hartline visits from Grand Island. James Green taken to Grand Island for medical care. Mrs Bert Warnick and daughters with Mrs Gus Mayo visit Osceola businesses.
Joyce Swan, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Snider, appeared on Tom Breneman’s Breakfast in Hollywood Tuesday morning. He resides in Minneapolis and is visiting Hollywood.
