In a high turnout city and school election on Tuesday Dr. Oberg led the race for the school board with Sam Crouse close behind. Melvin Pearson trailed by nine votes, as the full ticket won in the city race with ward by ward tallies listed.
Mrs Emil Schott died Sunday April 1 1934 in Shelby on her 74th birthday after years of ill health and a recent stroke. She was born Mary Magdalene Friedman in Canton Ohio and married Emil Schott in 1880. The family moved from Canton to Nebraska in 1885 and later settled in Shelby. Survived by husband ten children fifteen grandchildren and one brother and one sister funeral services were held Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church Shelby with interment in Shelby Catholic Cemetery.
Farmers who signed the corn-hog or wheat reduction contracts and missed the instruction can obtain farm record books at the agricultural agent's office in Osceola. The simple books help keep 1934 farming operation records. staff will explain usage. Free copies with ample supply.
Stromsburg residents report visits to Omaha for family and medical matters. University of Lincoln students, local business moves at Park View Station, and a benefit bridge event aid the J. B. Buckley market. Stromsburg schools resume. city election yields 475 votes with Dr R L Minnick elected mayor and other local officials chosen.
Miss Neola E. Wilmer and John R. Fillman were married Monday morning April 2, 1934 in Wahoo Nebraska by Rev. Harold M. Bryant of the First Methodist Church. Both graduates of Osceola high school. The bride formerly worked in the county treasurer’s office and is training as a nurse in Rochester Minnesota. The groom has served as deputy county clerk for three years. They will reside in Osceola.
The First Methodist Church presented its Easter Cantata Olivet To Calvary before a large audience. Ruth Miller directed with pipe organ by Mrs Kenneth Cornish. Soloists included Mrs W E Thompson Richard Merrick and Leon Merrick.
R A Graham district manager of the Iowa Nebraska Light and Power Company spoke to the Osceola Community Club on March 27 1934. He discussed industry revenue declines from the economic downturn and tax burdens. He said removing taxes could let the company offer residents four months of free electricity at current low rates. He noted rate cuts since 1912 totaling 46 percent in 1933, driven by efficiency and more customers, while taxes rose sharply from 1930 to 1932. He cited federal state and local expenditure growth and a 1932 government cost of 4.6 percent of national income versus 15.3 percent in 1929 and 8.5 percent in 1913.
The Nitro Gun Club held a quarterly medal shoot at the trap grounds. W. E. Snider won the gold medal with 23 of 25, W. Roy VanHoosen took the silver after a 23 of 25 shoot off, Paul Engelhardt earned the leather medal, and O. W. Mickey placed high with 22 of 25 in the shoot off.
The Polk County exclusion woman's clubs announce a new date for the Achievement Day Program now set for April 11, 1934. The event will be hosted at Green's Chapel Church.

Agricultural Agent Kelly of Polk county relayed word from state administrator W H Brokaw that the deadline for accepting corn hog reduction contracts is Saturday April 7. Brokaw urged farmers who delayed signing to submit now as county committees will sign no more contracts after the deadline and local papers must publish producer records before final contract changes.
The corn hog section ruled that oats sown on land planted to wheat last fall in case of winter killing may be counted in the feed crop base. Oats and barley grown on such land in 1932 and 1983 may be considered part of the feed crop base with no deduction as in corn.

Mrs Agnes Kumpf of Huron and relatives visit in Shelby at Archie Kumpfs home. Lincoln trips bring Mrs Whitney and Mrs Merrick. Typhoid fever cases near recovery. Easter visits include Egger, Hayhurst, Harless, Brillhart, and Seabeck families with travel to Omaha and David City.
Polk county farmers must file applications by April 15 for Clarke McNary seedling and transplant trees. Agricultural Agent F B Kelly quotes Clay ton W Watkins extension forester noting abundant supplies of Chinese elm mulberry cottonwood box elder Russian olive American elm Austrian pine and jack pine. Farmers in all counties have ordered over 50 000 trees with nearly 300 000 Chinese elms already ordered and 100 000 more available. Shipments begin March 30 with evergreen varieties from the Nebraska National Forest at Halsay and broadleaf types from Fremont.
Citizens urged to gather junk and trash for loading during April 9 to 14. City and Community teams will haul away items free on April 12 and 13. Residents asked to cooperate and paint where able during the week.

Leonard Eugene Backlund born April 4 1888 died suddenly at his Osceola produce store from heart trouble. He moved from Stromsburg four years ago to run a produce business and is survived by his widow Mabel Mollerstrom Backlund and four children Jeanne Phyllis Edgar Willard Burdette Floyd and Merle Conwell. He had deep church ties in Stromsburg and was buried in Stromsburg Cemetery after funeral services at Stromsburg Baptist Church with ministers Hedburg and Wright.
Osceola mayor I W E Pierson proclaims Arbor Day on Monday April 23 inviting societies clubs and individuals to donate trees shrubs or flowers for the park. Markers may identify donors and Park Board members are listed for contact. County spelling contest held in Osceola sees Bettie Thelander and Anna Marsden winning top prizes and Polk County reps advancing to state and inter state contests.
Social notes report Viola Seberger and Walter Tschauner honored at Ellers hall with a mock wedding and gifts unwrapped at four o clock. A luncheon followed before departure.
Polk County farmers have borrows a total of 607 441 20 dollars in corn loans from the federal government, according to county records. Current storage shows 1 350 637 bushels of corn cribbed and sealed in Polk County.
The Rebekah Lodges of the 18th district met in Shelby with 160 attendees. State president Mrs. Ree Pierre of Fremont attended, and Osceola Lodge contributed 30 members who led initiatory work. Dinner was served in the evening at the U. B. Church.
The Osceola Woman's Club held a general meeting in the High School auditorium. They set plans for the annual Spring Party at the Lutheran Church parlors on May 7 at 6 30 p m, a Mother Daughter event. Mrs Fred Gilbert resigns as recording secretary elect and Mrs W E Thompson is elected. Mrs Campbell installed officers for the next club year. Gilbert announced a hike for April 17 at 7 30 p m. The Drama Department presented Tea and Toast a satire on why women are popular. Cast included Gilbert Norton Engelhardt Mer tick Huston Nuquist Kirtley Eklund. Carl Bryant demonstrated stage lighting with a miniature theatre after the playset.
The T J C Bridge Club will meet with Mrs Paul Joy on Thursday evening of next week.
Dwight Griswold, Gordon editor and ex Nebraska Press Association president, filed Monday as a Republican candidate for governor. He previously led the GOP ticket in 1932 but lost to Governor Bryan by 35,000 votes while Roosevelt carried the state by 157,000, the largest vote ever for an un elected candidate in Nebraska.
