Flame Cultivation Proves Farm Test Success at Universities
Cornell and Mississippi State tests show flame cultivation effective on sugar cane and cotton with two opposing flames behind tractors. Tall plants escape damage and may require hand removal of Johnson grass and pigweed, while flaming and hoeing yield similar results for seed cotton. The system enables cotton production without hand labor via cross plowing, flaming and machine picking.

Swine Tuberculosis Spread by Chickens
Tuberculosis in swine rose 10 percent last year per the American Veterinary Medical Association. One in 14 slaughtered hogs had lesions, condemning the meat. The disease does not spread hog to hog unless sow udders are infected. Eradication depends on eliminating tuberculosis in cattle and poultry, with old flocks of chickens major spreaders to swine. Farmers should keep poultry out of hog lots and dispose of older birds annually.
