The Bystander attacks the Legislature over on sale and off sale liquor options, criticizes amendments as bootlegger targets, and mocks proposed liquor commissions. It notes pay for members, looming special sessions, FHA loans, HOLC, and football radio schemes, with references to Huey Long and F D R and a chaotic policy scene.
The Polk County National Farm Loan association reports a permanent rate cut from 5 to 4 1/2 percent on all land bank loans closed after April 1. D P Hogan of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha announces the milestone, noting savings for borrowers and continued 5 percent on commissioner loans.
Shelby residents report visits and travel to Nebraska and nearby states. Families visit relatives near Chappel and Chicago, while others return from hospital care in Kearney and at the University hospital. Medical operations are noted for Floyd Croisant and Mary Foster begins duties at Sacred Heart rectory.
Mr and Mrs Walter W Berck were honored in church parlors last Thursday with over eighty five Sun day School and Church members and friends present. Berck has served five years as Sunday School Superintendent and the program included piano solo talks and vocal numbers followed by refreshments and a rocker gift from the Sunday School.
Mrs John Albers underwent a major operation at Osceola Hospital last Friday performed by Dr McGoogan of Omaha and Dr R L Schroeder. Joe Wieseman had surgery Sunday by Dr Charles Owens of Omaha with favorable condition reported. Mrs Joe Need of the valley had a minor operation Tuesday morning by Dr R L Schroeder.

Mills and Phil Campbell were chosen as school board members in the city election held Tuesday. Voter turnout was light with just over 200 votes cast across both wards. George Carson and Walter Wells won council seats in the same election.
The Osceola Garden Club gathered Tuesday evening with Mrs. Gunnard Peterson. Members returning from the National Flower and Garden show in Omaha praised the display. The club plans a summer flower garden at the Standard Oil filling station site and invites all to attend the April 16 meeting hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Locke.
The Rebekah lodges of Polk Osceola Shelby Rising City Dav id City and Bellwood met in Rising City high school gym on March 30 with about 100 in attendance. State president Mrs Roundtree and State Secretary Clara Lush attended. Officers elected: president Mrs Bessie Ireland Shelby vice president Miss Edith Gray Osceola secretary Mrs Abbott Shelby treasurer Mrs Weitzey Bellwood. The 1936 meeting is planned for Bellwood.
Miss Lillian H. J. Sjogren and Harris B. Sundberg wed at Swede Home Lutheran Church on a Wednesday afternoon. Rev C A Sword officiated with attendants Esther Sjogren and Howard Sundberg. A pink yellow reception followed with 50 relatives present. The couple will honeymoon briefly then reside on a nearby farm.
Local residents travel between Stromsburg and nearby towns visiting relatives and attending events from Omaha flower shows to a Midland College choir concert. Athletic and school happenings include a pep club banquet and a tense appendicitis spell for a local girl, plus a city election with close mayoral and council races.
Miss Ruby Anderson daughter of Mr and Mrs E A Anderson of Polk and Lloyd Krader son of Mr and Mrs R E Krader of Clarks were married at the Methodist parsonage by Rev E R Peterson. The ceremony coincided with the bride’s parents 49th wedding anniversary and a reception followed. The couple has no definite plans yet.
The Osceola glee clubs stage Gilbert and Sullivan’s H. M. S. Pinafore next Tuesday evening at Ri voli Theatre. Admission is 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. Clayton Fredrickson leads as the captain with Ray Dalton as Sir Joseph Porter. Warren Johnson is Ralph Rackstraw and Allen Scholz plays Dick Deadeye. Cast includes Morris Tenn John Irland Kathryn Klein Ruth Zang Maxine Johnson and a 76-member chorus.
Luella A. van Houten died at her Colorado Springs home on March 26 after a yearlong illness. She leaves her husband Charles Robert van Houten a daughter Mrs. Charles W. Bybee two brothers Herbert L. Pratt and William E. Pratt two sisters Mrs. Alice Sipherd and Mrs. George Brooke grave services are set for Thursday at 3 15 p m in the Law drawing room with Rev. Paul Roberts to officiate interment in Evergreen Colorado Springs Telegraph March 26.
Osceola Women’s Club held its final meeting of the year on Monday. Spring Party is set for the first Monday night in May and April dues payers may reserve a plate. The club approved a General Federation Magazine subscription for the City Library. The 4th District Convention occurs at Geneva April 11 12. Officers were installed for the new year. Junior Club Drama Department presented a program including Piano Duet Alberta Miller and Marjorie Dunn, One Act Play directed by Marguerite Hartman, cast Irma Wieseman Irene Grossnicklaus Jean Rutter Alberta Miller Martha Huggler Florence Bowe Velma McCormick, and Vocal Solo Marguerite Hartman with Florence Bowe.
The Polk County Ministerial Association gathered at the Methodist Church in Osceola with all county ministers and their wives present. A noon dinner preceded an afternoon program of music prayer and a paper on The Millenium by Rev. J W Stiverson of Shelby. Officers were elected with Rev. W H Wright as president and Rev. Paul Melin as secretary and treasurer.
The Womens Foreign Missionary Kensington sponsored a Tuesday luncheon at the Methodist Church parlors. Seventy five attendees enjoyed a long-table meal and an address by Pearl Losnet, a returned missionary from northern China. A vocal trio featuring Mrs. Clyde Smith Mrs. George Malek and Mrs. W. E. Thompson sang, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. F. E. Klein.
Polks residents hosted Sunday dinners with multiple families in attendance. Local events included a Choral Concert at the Baptist Church featuring The Holy City, and the Polk Country Club election of officers. Obituaries note deaths of Orville Dobberstein, R. E. Krader, and Henry Knerr with services in Polk.
