York-Columbus Freeway Plan Favored by Polk County Residents

The State Roads Dept. outlines a corridor for the York Columbus freeway, matching Polk Countians hopes. G. C. Strobel shared the plan with the State Highway Commission, which will meet Friday and forward recommendations to the governor. Osceola reports a flurry of remodeling across town as Whip O Creme adds retaining walls and Builders Supply builds a new front area. Vic Cerny plans enclosing side areas for year round dining while expanding open season. Al Yungdahl and Raymond Watts host an open house April 2 unveiling moved lumber stocks in the former Wobig building.

Legion Dinner Honors Members and Speakers at Morse Bluffs

Frank Vlasek of Morse Bluffs addressed the Legion Anniversary dinner with Ed Farr of District 7 also speaking before a crowd of well over 100 at the Legion Club. Vernon Kuhnel presided as post commander as membership awards were handed to multiple members for 10 to 50 plus years.

Student Lea Rumery joins Dr. Wallace Monson as assistant

Lea Rumery began a 12 week training stint with Dr. Wallace Monson at Curtis Nebraska. She studies animal technology at the University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture and is in the third quarter of a seven quarter program. Rumery is a 1970 David City High School graduate and plans to work with a veterinarian after UNITA graduation. She will commute from her parents home in David City during the placement.

Center Plans New chapel and improvements at Good Samaritan Center

Marie Beebe donated to raise the Project Fund to 358 dollars. After projector and screen costs, any surplus funds religious pictures for the Center. Jim Wunderlich, Center Manager, will convert an unused east wing room into a chapel seating 35 to 40 and available for staff meetings and county groups after April. The building is now fully air conditioned.

The Bulldog track team coached by Al Stroup will attend the Henderson Relays on Saturday April 3 and the Polk County Track Meet at Stromsburg on Wednesday April 7 starting at 12 30. Band meeting yields no action due to low attendance

About a fourth of band members mothers attended a Tuesday March 24 meeting at Osceola High School led by Rex Cadwallader. With most eligible members absent no decisions were made and plans call for coffee and cookies after the pre contest concert April 20, with follow up to contact parents.

Easter Seal drive nears halfway mark in Nebraska

Wayne Mann reports the 1971 Nebraska Easter Seal Society fund drive is near halfway. Nebraskans receiving Easter Seals gifts get services from therapy to hospital equipment. The effort supports summer camping, research on crippling, and rehabilitation methods. Mrs. Mann urged others to help set a child free this Easter.

OVFD Plans Annual Dance to Support Local Fire Service

Osceola Volunteer Fire Department announces its annual dance on April 17 at the Legion Club in Osceola. The letter with ticket mailings highlights 90 plus hours fighting fires, 26 alarms answered, and 16 hours aiding neighboring departments, plus a fire prevention program for district grade school students during Fire Prevention Week.

County NFO Banquet Set With Pfingsten As Speaker

National Farmers Organization vice president Erhard Pfingsten will headline the Polk County NFO Banquet on April 14 in the Osceola High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets are available from NFO members. a program follows at 8 p.m. for those unable to attend dinner. Farmers and businessmen are invited to learn the NFO story. A storm note adds Harold's Market will spend about 350 dollars to replace a blown sign.

Osceola Names Boys State Representative

Randy Neujahr was chosen by Wm Wolfe Legion Post 91 to represent Osceola at Cornhusker Boys State in Lincoln this June. Mike Sterup was named alternate. Delegates are selected from Osceola High School juniors on scholarship leadership and citizenship. The aim is to educate youth in duties rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Delegates from across the state participate in a week of government workshops exams and mock elections.

The University of Nebraska Lincoln cited 1,785 students for exceptional scholarship at its 43rd annual Honors Convocation held March 30 in the UN Coliseum. Bill Moyers delivered the address. Golden wedding for Zedichers marks 50 years in Osceola

Ben and Julia Zedicher celebrated their golden wedding with an open house at the United Methodist Church parlors in Osceola on Sunday March 28 1971. Hosts were their children and spouses from Avoca Henderson National City New Brighton and Osceola with 140 guests registered. Gifts included money trees from nine children and 46 grandchildren plus 16 great grandchildren.

Five Osceola High School seniors Janice Peterson Bob Gissler Andy Kresha Bruce Treffer and Larry Neujahr will be honored by the York Elks Tuesday April 6 at a dinner and program. Local dignitaries and student helpers are listed along with out of town guests from multiple towns. A separate notice promotes a Childrens Clothes Workshop at Osceola City Hall with April 14 and 21 sessions and a $1 registration.

Local Scouts Plan Goodwill Bag Pickup Drive

Osceolans are reminded that Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will collect filled Goodwill bags from 9 30 a m Saturday. Residents should place bags on front porches by 9 30 with no newspapers. Cubs and Scouts meet at First United Methodist Church before 9 30 and parents with pickup trucks are asked to help. Last week 12 Cubs and Scouts distributed bags and were aided by Stan Van Hoosen Bob Grossnicklaus Ed Mangelsen Eugene Sterup and R. V. Odgers.

A delegation from Osceola Shelby Polk Gresham Benedict and Waco met in Osceola on Friday March 26. Frank Ostrander was elected league president and John May treasurer.
