Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Barney Walford of Gresham they assume management of Ryan Hill Country Club. Mr. Walford is on duty now and Mrs. Walford will begin assisting him later this month.
John F. Applegate announces a 3 state Wichita Region change transferring non local mail from Osceola to central offices to improve efficiency. Osceola mail will be cancelled locally with future Columbus cancellations. 9 sorting groups will replace 27. hours may shorten to 4 30 p.m. closing if mailing is delayed.
The Polk County Republican Women will meet Monday April 19 at noon for a luncheon at the Stromsburg Hotel. A business meeting will follow.
Members placed posters in Osceola store windows to launch a campaign for Keep Nebraska Beautiful Month in April. Ten girls from the Country Cousins 4-H Club organize the effort to raise local awareness and participation.
The annual Child Welfare Tea sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary will be held Monday afternoon April 19 at the Legion Club rooms. Co hosts are Mrs. Paul Walgren and Mrs. Earl Watts. Mrs Mark Romohr of Gresham Department chairman of Junior Activities will be the featured speaker. Tickets 75 cents in advance from any Auxiliary member. The club's project focuses on clean up paint up and fix up. Mrs Gerhardt Lux leads the Country Cousins assisted by Mrs Howard Boden.
A. Barnes from the Division of Employment Nebraska Department of Labor will speak at the Welfare Office in Osceola on Tuesday April 27 at 1 30 pm and at the Welfare Office in David City on April 13 at 1 30 pm. The Fund for the Samaritan Home projector reaches 370 dollars from Contributions in Memory of Mrs Marie Carpenter.
Leo Potter a University of Nebraska Lincoln student and Tau Kappa Epsilon member attended a membership recruitment clinic at Kansas University Lawrence on March 27. Potter joined Tekes from the Midwest. he is a pledge of his campus chapter.
The Centennial Book Committee will meet Tuesday, April 13 at 9 30 p.m. at City Hall. The publisher of the forthcoming book will join the meeting with committee members and the art class. Attendees invited.
In Osceola the school board approved a 6600 base salary for teachers with a bachelor's degree plus 4 percent annual increases for each year of service and for 9 credit hours above a bachelor’s, enabling a top of 11352 for a master’s with 18 extra hours and 12 years in the system.
Don Buller of Henderson has been employed by the Board of Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital as the new administrator. He will begin duties May 1. Mrs Ruth Hanson has been acting administrator since January, after Margaret Dozier resigned to take a position in Dallas County Hospital in Perry Iowa.
LeRoy Flink owner of Stromsburg Hotel and Cafe buys City Cafe Osceola from Don Darling. He will split time between Stromsburg and Osceola with Mrs Flink overseeing Stromsburg places. City Cafe hours: closes 4 PM Mondays for cleaning, stays open till 8 30 PM weekdays, Saturday evenings open, Sundays close at 3 PM.
Nora Snodgrass the newly named local Junior American Legion Auxiliary chairman and Caro lyn Wieseman the Auxiliary president led nine prospective members at the District Junior Conference in Cedar Bluffs on March 27. Names on the trip included Denise Snodgrass Jackie Rowan Jody Rowan Janet Urban Connie Urban Vicki Wieseman Mary Jo Wieseman Robin Walgren and Margie Lux. A 4 p m Thursday Legion Hall meeting plans to organize the junior group and elect officers. Twenty one girls have signed to participate to date.
The Gresham IOOF and Osceola Rising Star Lodge 75 consolidated at Osceola on Monday evening April 5. Consolidating officers were Jesse Dobrolovany of Atkinson Grand Master and Virgil Carter of York Grand Secretary. About 30 members attended and enjoyed lunch served by Osceola Rebekahs.

Osceola placed second as Jim Carlson won the low hurdles and helped score in four other events. Cal Coffin led sprints with firsts in the 220 and 440, while Lynn Boden and Jim Green also contributed top finishes. Strong winds and rain canceled relays later, then Henderson Relays produced two new records: Mile Medley and Mile Relay, with Jim Green, Jim Carlson, Tom Yungdah, and Cal Coffin triumphant in the medley and Green, Carlson, Mike Johnston, Coffin taking the mile relay.
A large crowd attended the Polk County Feeders spring barbecue at Ryan Hill Country Club on Monday evening April 5. President Bill Kumpf presided. Vernon Boden moderated a panel on agricultural trends featuring Dr. Wallace Monson of the University of Nebraska Curtis campus, Norman Leach, Floyd Goldstine of Sunflower Packing Co., and Bob Lushbow of the Columbus Sale Pavilion. Reports covered fertilizers by Ken Olson and area elevators.
Lions District Governor Pete Lakers will visit the Osceola Lions Club on April 19. He and his wife will attend a dinner at 7 p.m. at the Ryan Hill Country Club.
Tuberculin skin tests will be given in Polk County on Tuesday April 20 for grades 1 6 and 9. Sessions run 9 00 Shelby 10 00 Osceola 11 00 Polk 1 00 District 28 2 00 Stromsburg with Osceola at Jeffrey Elementary and the High School. Parents receive consent slips around April 15 and school staff involved will be tested. The effort is by the State Department of Health in cooperation with the State Medical Association.
The Polk County NFO will hold an Osceola auditorium banquet next Wednesday featuring two barbecued hogs. Tickets are free to business men and non members, with an 8 o clock speech by Erhard Pfingsten national vice president of the NFO.
Osceola's athletic banquet featured Doane College coach Bob Ericson stressing youth as community capital and three levels of learning competition. Honored guest Alan Gissler, Doane standout and All-American honorable mention, attended with musical groups performing.]]>
