The U S Department of Agriculture advises feeding to maximize milk. Highly specialized cows should be fed liberally while general purpose cows must balance feed to milk output. Dry cows need enough to stay sturdy, and beefy cows should not be overfed to avoid fattening and reduced dairy returns.
The text advises separating bulls from females until six months, with safe service possible at ten months but recommends waiting until twelve months to avoid hindering growth. It states a bull can serve as many cows in a season as his age in months, and in year round herds one bull may suffice for 40 to 50 cows.
