Meeting Alice and Her Southern Family on a New York Ride
A man in a chance encounter on a rapid transit trip befriends Alice, a Virginia girl visiting New York with her father. He recalls the father’s noble, trusting nature and a business windfall tied to a power project, while the narrator contemplates his own morally corrupt schemes and the pull of genuine affection.
