A letter dated December 31, 1909 from Prof. A L Mayfield, former superintendent of Ocon schools, writes of experiences in San Fernando P I. He details isolation among natives, criticisms of teaching practice, and the local economy based on European American or Chinese enterprises. He plans to return to the U S in April to finish his law studies and practice.
D L Weiner long serving Montgomery postmaster moves across the street into a new building with purchased property and new furniture. He held the post for fourteen years spanning Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland administrations, marking a continued tenure in Bar Township.
Barbara Gimlin of Van Buren township died Friday after a short illness from fatty degeneration of the heart. She was born in Ohio and was 51. She never married. Her father and three brothers survive. Funeral services were held at Raglesville Saturday at eleven with Rev. Jelock McVey in charge. Burial followed in the Raglesville cemetery.
Thomas Rycer, 85, a Reeve township farmer and German native, was found dead in a straw shed from hanging himself with binder twine. Coroner's inquest held. he had recently been ill and unable to work, living with daughter Mrs. Alex Archibald.

By a large delegate majority at Columbus Elmer E. Hastings of Washington was elected president of the Lincoln League. Grant Fitch of Columbus opposed him. One ballot chose Hastings and Fitch moved to unanimity. About five hundred delegates attended, with many from this county.
Washington Herald notes J. Biddinge returned from Arkansas after closing a large rice land deal. Dr. R. M. Smiley Dr. Roy Smiley Lt. E. Van Osdel gain 20 acres. da S. Horrall Ezra Mattingiy acquire 120 acres. J. B. Slater and partners own 660 acres. Plan to plant over 100 acres in rice. ALF. Biddinger organized the transaction.
Mrs. Poindexter an elderly Burns City resident died Saturday from old age illnesses. A devout Christian long affiliated with the M E church she was 86. Nine children survive. Funeral Sunday at Burns City M E church conducted by Rev Eng T Lewis with burial in Burns City cemetery.
A mailbox on rural route No 3 near Greenville Indiana was looted of letters over several days. Observers reported English sparrows plucked letters from the box, then delivered them to a fence corner. The birds appeared to target the box to build a nest, drawing suspicion of pilfered mail.
Daviess county will receive 81644.75 under the tuition deficiency act to cover shortfalls preventing full term completion. Robert J. Aley, state superintendent, announced distributions for 29 counties after calls asking counties to report their deficiencies.
Michael Henry Thomas of Elmore township and Nora Agnes Hand of Barr township wed Saturday in a ceremony at the First Methodist church in Washington, conducted by Rev. KF. AL Steele. The bride is daughter of William Hand, a farmer, and the groom is son of Henry Philip Thomas, a farmer.
Bret Coleman son of Dr. J W Coleman of Petersburg and Gertrude Toelle daughter of Fred Toelle of Elnora were married recently in Terre Haute and will reside there Mr Coleman works in the revenue office and his bride had been employed there Miss Toelle formerly lived in Odon and has many friends here
A marriage license was issued Friday to Harley Abner Smiley son of Trustee W. B. Smiley and Van Buren township figure, and Elva May Suallen a popular Van Buren woman.
Upstairs a group of married women boast of fast talking babies. One claims a daughter spoke at one year and a boy said papa and anama at ten months. An old bachelor quotes Job cursing the day he was born, ending the chat as lighthearted folklore.
Judge Albert J Marsh of Winchester will step down as pension agent after eight years of service amid a quarterly settlement. John W Dyer of Hammond is slated to succeed him. Marsh has handled large sums with noted accuracy and recently bought a small farm in Randolph County.
Lucinda Fields aged about 99 or 100 will celebrate her hundredth birthday on March 17 at Washington with her daughter Mrs. Andrew Bates. She is mostly bedridden and slightly deaf but stays cheerful and enjoys recalling olden times in conversation. She does not wear glasses and reads large print when possible.
A commission has declared Mrs Emma Faith of Washington unsound mind. She is the wife of Grant Faith. The ruling formalizes her status as declared insane by the mental health panel.
A Knox county farm of 985 acres once sold for 5 per acre including valuable timber that has since been removed. A few days ago the same farm minus the timber sold for 50000 dollars. What would the farm be.
