From Mt Houston Texas January 1910 letter to the editor praising mild winter, abundant orange orchards and a thriving garden truck trade. Authors report rapid land opportunities, cheap acreage, and high yield potential with hard work, urging northern friends to relocate for enterprise.
Workmen completed changes in the court rooms after orders from the county commissions. The judge s bench was moved forward eliminating a small alcove, reducing court room space but freeing much needed room for the library.
James Courter died Tuesday on his Switzerland County farm. Born in 182? he would have turned 105 next April. A lifelong Democrat, he cast his first presidential vote for Andrew Jackson in 1829 and never missed a ballot. He reportedly smoked and spent only five dollars on medicine in his life.
A large crowd heard Rev. Eug. T. Lewis speak at the M E church in Rane by nicht on Courtship and Marriage. The sermon drew interest and was well delivered by the speaker, with congregants attentive throughout.
Albert Beami of Crooke elected to lead Centenary College following a capital drive that raised over 260 000 in special funds for the college. Dr Chas W Crooke, currently in Dallas, Texas, is a former preacher and educator with a long history at DePauw and Green Castle Circuit and will guide Centenary’s revival and expansion efforts.
A civil service examination for post master at Smithville is to be held in Bloomington on February 10. The yearly salary is unknown, and nearly everybody in the town wants the job. Principal qualifications include ability to read postal cards and be accommodating to patrons by providing a comfortable place to play checkers, swap stories, and read the papers that come to the officer.
William Duncan, an 80 year old farmer of Washington Township, died Sunday afternoon. He left three children and an estate valued at about 4,000 dollars, consisting of a farm of five acres and personal property.
Daviess county joins 23 other Indiana counties asking the state superintendent for additional school money. The 24 counties demand a total of 134,348.06 dollars to cover the period, with funds expected to run out before all applicants are satisfied.
The marriage of William Francis O'Brien sixty eight and Laura Jane Farrell sixty, both residents of Barr township, occurred at Montgomery on Tuesday.
Warren Cosby seventeen year old son of Mr and Mrs Wim W Cosby of south Washington died Monday morning at home from consumption.
A Missouri man travels in Arkansas with a native evangelist. When asked his destination the evangelist replies heaven. The Missourian quips that after 18 years on the road to heaven he is still in Arkansas and jokes about being a mile and a half from hell. The exchange ends with a sharp, humorous remark.
Petitions circulating in Odon and nearby towns seek a presidential pardon for John R. Walsh the elderly banker and railroad man serving time at Ft Leavenworth The public shows broad support with hundreds signed in Carveite Putnam Vigo and Sullivan counties and others in Bedord County The drive aims to forward petitions to the president for an unconditional pardon.
Olon Court No 47 PT B expresses heartfelt sympathy for the death of sister Eliza Cooper. The committee resolved to extend condolences to the family, recall her cheerful service in life, and publish copies of the resolutions locally and for the family.

Elisha Doane a prosperous Van Buren farmer will move his family to Texas soon. Mr Doane lives about four miles south of Udon.
Dr. Peter M. Cook of Bloomfield, Greene County auditor, won 1000 damages from the Indianapolis Southern railroad by a Monroe County jury in Bloomington. Injuries occurred in 1906 when he drove into a ditch during road construction, upsetting his buggy. He sought 410,000.
Sylvester Kidwell died Friday on his 160 acre Bramble area farm in Martin county after living there over fifty years. He was eighty seven and father of twenty one children from four marriages. Funeral services were held Sunday at 8 a m in Bramble.
Robert Purdue a Washington township farmer filed an affidavit in Justice of the Peace court against Sheron owner of the Sheron billiard and pool hall in Washington alleging he permitted a minor to play pool when Purdue found his underage son there Saturday.
Fred Toelle of Elnora sold his general store and poultry business to Tomey Bros. He previously conducted business at Oion.
Hervey Trueblood of Washington purchases the W. L. Brown farm of 101 acres near Washington. The farm’s boundaries join Trueblood’s existing property and the consideration is $9,163.
