Rocket explodes after Atlas Centaur launch near Cape Canaveral

A Atlas Centaur rocket carrying a $49.4 million Intelsat 4A satellite exploded four miles up a minute after liftoff near Cape Canaveral. Space agency officials halted all launches to conduct a full investigation, mirroring a Delta rocket blast 15 days earlier that destroyed a European Space Agency satellite.

Chlorine Gas Leak Forces Philadelphia Evacuations

In northwest Philadelphia a chlorine gas leak from a water plant damaged area blocks forcing several hundred families to evacuate. Police say a valve between one ton gas tanks and machinery malfunctioned releasing a cloud. Over 100 people treated at hospitals and released. The incident occurred about 2 a.m.

County Approves Public Defender Plan for Huron County

County commissioners approve a public defender program to start by January 1 1978 funding it from county funds after two failed federal applications. A five member commission will hire and budget the defender with judge Robert W Smith appointing two attorneys Norwalk residents Henry Young and Walter Hite.

Bonfire of Temptations Prompts Church Cleansing

In North Olmsted Ohio a 400 member Southern Baptist congregation plans an outdoor bonfire to burn temptations. Rev John W Withers of Columbia Road Baptist Church lists bikini swimsuits television sets and hard rock records as examples. He singles out the Interpreter's Bible as too liberal to keep.
