Moose in Augusta Goes on Two Hour Downtown Chase

A bull moose with seven foot antlers roamed Augusta Maine for two hours on Wednesday prompting a police pursuit through the west side downtown area and state Capitol complex before returning to the north woods. Officers documented the incident with a tuft of moose hair attached to their report.

Ohio Senate approves heating bill for low income elderly

The Ohio Senate unanimously passed a measure offering a 25 percent discount on natural gas and electric bills to qualifying low income elderly or disabled residents for the next two winters. The bill goes back to the House for concurrence in changes.

In Dacca five hostages including two Americans were released by Red Army guerrillas after hijacking a jetliner. The group warned they would kill 151 others if Japan does not free nine radicals and pay 6 million dollars by midnight. The government promised to meet some demands but could not deliver by the deadline. A ninth captive radical also rejected an offered freedom.

Milan Police Chief Fired After Council Vote

Milan Village Council dismissed Police Chief Gary Limbird for inefficiency and incompetency after four hours of testimony in a closed session. Edmund Fitzgerald Sinks After Striking Ground On Lake Superior

The Lake Carriers' Association said the Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a November 1975 storm after striking ground, killing all 29 aboard. The Coast Guard reported the ship flooded and broke apart in about 500 feet, while the association suggested a shoal or reef collision as the cause.

EHOVE Pact Ratified by Board of Education

The EHOVE Board ratified a two year pact for teachers after a Wednesday night special meeting ending an impasse from the 1976-77 year. The contract first raises pay by 400 this year boosting base salary from 8650 to 9050 and adds a later 400 raise to 9450 on July 1, 1978. The district will cover any rise in hospital insurance premiums and adds a new step in the experience pay scale.
