Norwalk High School senior Sam Arthur and New London High School senior William Spoerr have advanced to the National Merit Scholarship Program semifinal, among about 100 nationwide. The 17 year old Arthur is praised as a well rounded student and serves as football captain and golf athlete, while Spoerr participates in activities from the American Field Service Club to Thespians and holds National Honor Society membership. About 2,900 students compete for 2,400 four year merit scholarships and 500 one time $1000 awards in 1968, with final scholarship announcements due by May 1968.

Norwalk resident Edward T. Snyder, 20, is charged with manslaughter and drag racing after a fatal crash Friday near Milan. Co-defendants Lebus Holbrook, 24, and Roy Fleming, 21, face similar counts for false information and related charges. The trio appeared in Erie County Court with hearings set through October. Harold E. Chaffee, 22, died hours after their car struck a telephone pole on Bryan Road near US 250, ejecting Chaffee and two others. The accident followed a tangle of downed wires. Holbrook and Fleming drove into the wreckage shortly after.
