Agnew Faces Ethnic Slur Controversy in Hawaii Trip

During a Hawaii campaign swing for the 1960 race Spiro Agnew denied slurring Poles and Japanese Americans after using terms deemed insulting. Rep. Matsunaga condemned the remarks while Agnew recounted childhood ridicule and defended casual slang as jest. The incident involved journalist Gene Oishi of the Baltimore Sun.

Woman and Infant Plunge From Jet Ramp Accident

A 35 year old Cleveland woman Alma Krekus and her 17 month old son Ronald fell 12 feet from a jet bridge in Philadelphia after a fuel truck backed away and struck the mobile ramp. Alma injured critically with skull and back fractures while Ronald suffered a skull fracture and is in fair condition. Flight had originated in New York with stops in Cleveland Chicago Seattle and Honolulu. The incident occurred as the Northwest Orient Airlines 720 refueled and the ramp was struck by the truck front fender.

Gunman Makes Dash For Food In Six Day Vigil

SHREWSBURY England UP I Gunman John James left his farmhouse for a 15 second dash to collect food left by relatives Inside the gaunt stone house his wife and four children stay hidden as James holds a 12 gauge shotgun Vigil continued. Firemen policemen and army troops sheltered behind shields as he ignored them. Prisoner in Willard Jail Snatches Gun During Escape Attempt

Lorenzo Frye, jailed for drunken driving, used a coat hanger and radio antenna to snag a .38 pistol from weapons storage. He fired once as guard Sgt.
