Fire Marshal Suspended After Beverly Hills Nightclub Fire

Kentucky investigators faulted the Beverly Hills Supper Club owners and officials for fire code violations and overcrowding that led to 164 deaths. Gov. Carroll suspended Fire Marshal Warren Southworth for ineffective enforcement as the report cites locked doors missing sprinklers hazardous wiring and improper construction. The Cabaret Room capacity was 536 but about 1 360 to 1 360 patrons crowded in with 160 of the fatalities there.

Colby not ruled out on CIA bugging Torrijos

Former CIA Director William Colby said he would not disapprove if the agency did bug Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos, noting there are situations where eavesdropping could be advantageous. The remark came during a USC weekend conference.

Two 14-Year-Old Girls Die In Huron County Crashes

In Huron County a 14-year-old North Fairfield girl Ardana Eastman died after a bicycle was struck by a car on Boughtonville Road near Willard. The driver Randolph Philbrick, 25, and another vehicle rider fled components. Ardana Eastman died at Willard Area Hospital. The Ohio Highway Patrol investigates. Philip J. Gaeta, 26, of Tallmadge, died in a one car crash on Ohio 18 near Chenango Road after hitting a guardrail. He was pronounced dead at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. Gaeta's body was sent to Prentice and Company Funeral Home in Akron.

More than 40 participants from individuals and organizations set up booths on Main Street for Norwalk’s Community Garage Sale and Junktique despite overcast skies. The 1 p.m. auction raised over $311 for the Norwalk and St. Paul Boosters Cl ub, with plans for a possible annual event next year.

Energy Action director James Flag says the top 21 oil companies earned 5.74 billion dollars in the first half of 1977, up from 2.82 billion in the same period of 1972. The figures come from the companies themselves in current dollars.

Kent State gym project begins amid protest near 1970 deaths

A tractor with a scoop shovel uprooted trees at Kent State University as work started on a six million dollar gym annex. Police escorted the heavy machinery while about 29 protesters were pushed back and a demonstrator named Louie blocked the truck briefly.

Bombs Hit Four Miami Hotels in Dawn Attacks

Four prominent Miami hotels were hit by bombs set by Cuban exile militants. No injuries reported. The Pedro Luis Boitel Commandos, an anti-C Castro group, claimed responsibility, following two earlier Washington bombings on September 7.

Widow Marina says Oswald halted Nixon plot after bathroom trick

Marina Oswald Porter recalls in a pre publication excerpt that she locked Lee Harvey Oswald in the bathroom and persuaded him to abandon plans to shoot Richard Nixon seven months before Kennedy’s assassination. She says she tricked him with pleas about the baby and hid his gun under the mattress.
