About 1,000 people named Kelly gathered in Castlebar for the first annual Kelly convention. Kellys from Kentucky Bronx Down Under and elsewhere joined locals in saloons and sang Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly as the event began.
The Navy will release 30,000 sailors from active duty early who joined under a two year reserve program. Sailors in Vietnam will not be affected by the plan.
UPI reports on a Senate fracas over gun control as next week’s vote approaches. Senator Joseph D. Tydings, a strong gun control advocate, argues crime rises with firearms access and challenges critics to back stricter laws to improve law and order.

Mayor Richard J. Daley anticipates a defining moment as he responds to television coverage of the Democratic National Convention disturbances. An hour-long film presenting Chicago’s side titled What Trees Do They Plant? airs Sunday at 9 p.m. CDT on most stations with a parallel radio broadcast. The film was produced in four days by Henry Ushijim Film Co. of Park Ridge with city workers and WGN.
Norwalk postpones final reading of the city income tax ordinance to October 1 from September 24 to allow public questions. Mayor Harold Finch says the plan remains to tax in the last quarter and an emergency clause could make it effective immediately.
Firelands Campus of Bowling Green State University plans a November dedication between November 8 and 15. Gov Rhodes and others will be invited. a founding fellow certificate will be awarded to donors of 1000 or more. Arrangements are led by the Firelands Advisory Board Public Affairs Committee.
An 11 year old Lorain boy, Peter Koch, died after being struck by a car behind the Vermilion turnpike plaza while a Salvation Army hayride group waited to go home. Russell Beach, 17, Oberlin, swerved to avoid him but the left fender hit the boy. The incident remains under investigation.
