West German prosecutor Ludwig Martin announced an arrest in a case alleging Soviet agents shipped stolen U S military gear to Moscow by air freight. The items include the guidance system from an American Sidewinder, a navigational device from the F104 Starfighter, and another aircraft direction finding system.
George C. Wallace told a Beaumont crowd that editors of large newspapers practice geographical bias against southerners and that the media are hypocritical for dishing it out but unable to take criticism.

Erie Huron Counties Community Action Commission director Cole resigns to take a civil rights commission post as director of the northwest region based in Toledo. He will handle housing public accommodations and employment discrimination with a $1500 annual raise and expects occasional hearings in the area before formal resignation.
A campaign spokesman said George White recommended filing a libel suit against The New York Times after an editorial linked Agnew's business dealings to his public office. Lawyers for Nixon and Agnew sought a retraction, but no final decision on a lawsuit had been made.
Former Wakeman police chief David F. Ortner 31 was sworn as a county deputy sheriff and starts duties November 1. Ortner, who and his family will reside in Willard, previously resigned amid dispute with Mayor Burns and was briefly fired before resignations were settled. He also serves as a flight engineer civilian employee at Selfridge Air Force Base and has 942 years of US Army service.
