Larry Lyons, 18, was convicted in Cincinnati on glue sniffing charges. Judge Joseph Luebbers sentenced him to 90 days in the workhouse and fined $200 plus costs after police found a tube of glue under his shirt when he appeared to convulse at his home. He became violent and had to be subdued.
A Norwalk welfare protest session drew about 60 people at the Recreation Center as Dr. Nino Camardese argued against state welfare payment policies. About 70 Oberlin College students staged a sit-in in front of the placement office as Navy recruiters met with college officials. They refused to release the recruiters while allowing others to leave, drawing a second group of about 100 students ready to protest any punitive action. No serious injuries or arrests reported.
Four key figures in the confrontation of Dr. Nino Camardese with anti-poverty and welfare officials Thursday night were asked this morning about their reaction to the meeting. They were asked if they thought anything was accomplished. Dr. Nino Camardese urged that clearing the air and helping at least one person understand what is going on would make the time well spent. George Lawrence said it was fairly successful with better understanding and Camardese handling himself well. Rev. George Hayduk noted the need to follow up with charity-based patient care and the possibility of returning if access remains restricted.
At Greenwich the Huron County Farm Bureau saw a proposed 3 dollar dues rise to 18 fail by two votes among 156 attendees. A resolution to move the Huron County Fair date also went down, while three other local measures passed by large margins.
