Washington reports Sen. Stephen Young of Ohio claims no Vietnam war songs are sung in the U S and cites the public's unpopularity of the war. He suggests the stance contrasts with Staff Sgt Barry Sadler and his hit The Ballad of the Green Berets during wartime.
Carl Stokes flew to Washington to meet President Johnson and attend a White House dinner with his wife, amid his campaign to become the first elected Negro mayor of a major American city. In a separate note, Sen. Edward V. Long faces a re election bid after ethics panel found no facts supporting Life magazine allegations of aiding Hoffa.
UPI reports Joseph E. Linville of the Ohio Savings and Loan League says mortgage funds are plentiful for home construction or purchase. He notes rising construction costs and price levels make now an excellent time to plan building or buying a new home.
Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes, emphasized that profit is not a dirty word, at a Financial World Magazine dinner in New York. About 1,500 business leaders heard that Ohio has led the nation in industrial expansion over the past three years.
Michigan's upper peninsula saw more than three inches of snow disrupting traffic and downing power lines prompting snow plows and helicopters in Houghton County to search for downed lines. The surprise storm came from Canada across the northern Great Lakes and was expected to bring more snowfall today.
South Vietnam declares a partial mobilization lowering the draft age from 20 to 18 and cutting deferments. The order, issued by Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu and Premier Nguyen Cao Ky, aims to raise manpower by about 60,000 to reach roughly 700,000 starting January 1, amid intensified U S criticism.
Harold Missler had planned to withdraw from the Norwalk Charter Commission race but ballots were already printed and withdrawals were no longer allowed. Missler, owner of Harold's Bar on Benedict Avenue, cited business time constraints but did not request withdrawal before the deadline. The one year term seat remains contested.

Dr. Nino Camardese prepares for a 7 p.m. public meeting at the Park and Recreation Center to challenge welfare policies. The Huron County Medical Society backs him, while Welfare Director George Lawrence defends state policy of paying 60 percent of medical bills for welfare recipients. Deputy State Welfare Director John Dalton may attend. The medical group accuses welfare agencies of indifference and subsidizing the department, urging patients to seek third-party funds for unpaid bills.
A Norwalk couple Mr and Mrs Richard C Myers welcome three week old Denise and David Gerar d Myers to their home at 23 Woodlawn Ave Each has a bassinet and a crib awaiting the future. Denise born Oct 2 and David born a day later were adopted from Toledo Catholic Charities.
At St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras embraced as nearly 200 bishops attended the Synod of Bishops. The meeting marks a major move toward healing the 912 year split between Rome and Constantinople. Athenagoras arrives from Zurich in a jet bearing the peace makers inscription.
About 50 to 60 Oberlin College students formed a blockade on a public street preventing two Navy recruiters from leaving their cars. No arrests were made as police sought to persuade demonstrators to clear the highway. Recruiter Lt Cmdr C R Smith warned of civil rights charges if interference continued.
Assistant Coach Tom McClain announced the St Pauls High School football game at Northwood Friday night is moved from 8 to 730 p m. Flyers fans are told to follow Route 20 west to Route 120 then north to Route 795 west near a state patrol station. The game will be played on the Lake High School Field.
