The eight day governors cruise ends with the suspension of the Independence chief operator over a purloined radiogram. California Governor Ronald Reagan received a radiogram meant for a White House liaison aboard the ship and condemned the action as persecution.
An F105 Thunderchief crashed into a C123 transport during a heavy downpour at Tan Son Nhut airport in Saigon. The Thunderchief pilot was killed while four C123 crew members were injured and rushed to a hospital with burns and a broken leg.
In Saigon a Buddhist monk cut his arm and used the blood as ink to write letters denouncing South Vietnam's government for religious persecution. Militant Buddhist leaders reportedly accepted three young girls' offer to immolate in Saigon to protest President-elect Nguyen Van Thieu's government.
Rolf Storhaug, 22, of Oslo, said the nine day Arctic ordeal with two companions has not deterred them from future flights. Co-pilot Einar Pedersen, 48, chief navigator for SAS, and Thor Tjoen tveit, 39, formerly a SAS navigator now with Wein-Alaska Airlines, were part of the crew.
Rep. Bob Wilson calls for a joint chiefs council plus retired generals and admirals to craft a victory plan for Vietnam. He argues Johnson should stop heeding civilians and let military leaders direct U S Vietnam policy.
More than 300 writers and editors including Norman Mailer and Benjamin Spock said they would not pay taxes used to finance the Vietnam War. They cited Thoreau and vowed to refuse the 10 percent surcharge and a portion of their regular income taxes earmarked for the war.

Larry R. Parks of Tiffin was arrested by FBI agents in Columbus and held in Franklin County Jail after an appearance before U S Commissioner Alphonse Cincione. He faces a federal charge for refusing induction with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a ten thousand dollar fine. The FBI said it had no reason for his refusal to be sworn in.

William Norton, 46, custodian in the Vermilion school system, was bound over to the Erie County Grand Jury on incest charges after his 13 year old daughter Claudette died of a self inflicted gunshot. Norton is jailed in Sandusky on $5000 bond. The case emerged in Vermilion Municipal Court. Norton and his wife have two other children. Spreading Joy Berkeley police seek a prankster who placed nine marijuana plants among Chancellor Heyns front yard.
Norwalk police will arrest train conductors who block city railroad crossings for more than five minutes. City officials cite state law per Public Utilities Commission of Ohio guidance. Arrests would occur in Mayor's Court with penalties from 2 to 20 dollars.
Leo Held, 39, the mass slayer who killed six and wounded six others, died at 6 a.m. from a pulmonary embolism after a shooting spree and a gun battle with police. Authorities plan to continue the investigation to determine motives while inquiries with survivors proceed.
Milan Jaycees asked village approval to illuminate the flagpole and fly the flag until the war ends to honor troops in Vietnam. The council approved free electricity and the project. A Nov. 10 ceremony and a new flag were planned. Meet The Candidates night set for Nov. 3 and November proclaimed Community Development Month.
UAW Local 1216 members in Sandusky vote tonight to ratify the national Ford contract. Production workers meet at 6 p.m. and skilled trades at 8 p.m. in Sandusky High School auditorium. Only national issues to be considered. local grievances unresolved and work return unclear.
Norwalk High School invites parents to a Back To School Night at 7 30 p m in the auditorium. New Superintendent Albion Gotaas will be introduced along with teachers. Parents tour seven minute class periods and meet staff guided by Future Teachers Association members.
