Housing survey delay after anti poverty worker remarks

Huron County commissioners postponed action on a housing survey after Rev. George Hayduk claimed conditions in Norwalk and the county breed despair and free speech is stifled. The delay seeks time to digest the section titled Social Poverty Problems, tied to a federal funds application for a Norwalk neighborhood center.

Steel Haulers Reject Mediation Proposal In Strike

Pittsburgh based union spokesman rejected a mediation panel settlement as unacceptable. The change reverses last week's events when haulers accepted a proposal that trucking firms had rejected. The new plan, drawn by a seven state panel, would please companies but not drivers.

School Open House Schedule For Norwalk Schools

The Norwalk City Schools begin seven open houses starting tonight at Benedict School. Parents meet at 7 30 p m to visit teachers and hear Supt Albion Gotass speak. Open houses continue 7 30 p m Thursday at Bronson and Monday at Pleasant with short sessions and 8 p m general meetings followed by refreshments.

Priest Will Speak At Safety Banquet

The Rev. Richard J. Connelly will address the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce annual Industrial Safety Banquet at 6 30 p m at Ellis Country Club. He serves as Ohio Chaplain of Fraternal and Service Organizations and has 21 years with the Cleveland Browns. He earned bronze and silver stars for WWII service.

Driver Trapped In Cab After 2 Hour Rescue

A Norwalk truck driver, Frank Keil, 42, was trapped for about two and a half hours when his tractor trailer carrying 39,000 pounds of scrap steel jackknifed and toppled into a ditch at Ohio 601. Fire and police freed him as wreckers kept the rig upright. he suffered fractures and was treated with morphine, listed in good condition at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. Traffic delayed as crews cleared the site and power outages affected the northwest side due to a fallen limb from the day’s storm.

Bypass Opening Set Six Weeks Ahead on Route 20

Traffic should move on the Route 20 bypass in about six weeks, says project superintendent Harold Myer. Crews poured the 24 foot main line pavement and started approaches, with blacktop for sidings following. The Route 18 interchange will stay graded until about next April, and bids for the overpass are to be awarded April 2 with completion late next fall.

Norwalk Seeks Federal Aid for Sewage Plant Upgrade

Norwalk has requested 150000 dollars in federal aid to fund a third stage sewage treatment facility costing about 475000. City officials will discuss the federal response with the Sewage Committee before the City Council meeting. The Ohio Health Department awarded the priority ranking, placing Norwalk 30th among 51 Ohio cities seeking aid.

Federal Aid Hard To Get for Willard Water Plan

Willard council members learned from City Manager Keith Armstrong that federal funds for the water program would be hard to obtain. Armstrong, in Chicago to file for HUD aid, was told federal money was scarce at present. The meeting also considered banning bicycle riding in the downtown business district and a potential bicycle licensing plan. An ordinance was approved renaming Fort Ball Road near Zick Road.

Crash Capsize At Whittlesey League Intersection

A two car crash in a rain storm knocked out the Whittlesey League Street traffic light for over nine hours. Bobby G. Hunter 25 of Whittlesey Ave treated for a scalp injury at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. Mrs. William Griffin 40 of Vermilion cited for failing to yield and signed a $15 court waiver. A second collision occurred on Old State Road when Donald D Walters 31 Sandusky reported frozen brakes as his semitrailer rolled back into a pickup driven by Thomas D Tomlinson 19 Wakeman.
