West Germany suspended one army unit officers for giving the Nazi salute and taking part in a mock Jew burning ceremony at a drinking party. Navy Capt Kurt Fischer said the officers were stripped of uniforms barred from army activity and confined to their posts pending disciplinary hearings.

Canton tax hike proposal fails in Canton Ohio vote

A proposed levy to raise Canton's city income tax from 1 to 2 percent failed 9 710 to 8 092. The extra revenue would have funded pay raises for non elected city workers, while council and Mayor Stanley Cmich warned layoffs could follow if the measure failed.

Playbook Back In Flyer Hands

St. Paul coach Dick Alge got back a playbook taken by Monroeville players last weekend. Principal Rockie Larizza said it contained defensive alignments and signals but no offensive plays. Monroeville coach Doug Short returned it and apologized. Larizza added the coaches remain friends and the incident won’t affect the game at Monroeville Friday night.

Mat plant workers resume after wildcat strike

About 50 Employees at the Durable Mat plant on North Pleasant Street returned to work at 11 30 after meetings on a possible wage increase. Plant manager Bill Gilbert could not confirm how many walked off and noted the workers are not unionized. The plant produces rubber mats dock bumpers and wheel chocks.

Norwalk Teachers Face Delayed 7.2 Percent Pay Hike Proposal

A three step plan would raise base pay from 8725 to 8850 on Nov 1, 9150 on Jan 1, and 9350 on April 1, 1978, totaling about 85000 with 4600 this year. The Norwalk Teachers Association seeks immediate 9600, while officials warn of financial strain and potential strike action if talks fail.

In Cleveland Ohio in a nonpartisan primary three term Mayor Ralph J Perk is toppled by Democrats Dennis Kucinich and Ed Feighan for a runoff.
