Woman offers bribery to police after accident arrest

A Dallas woman stopped after leaving an accident scene offered each officer a 10 dollar check to release her. Police took the funds as part of an arrest for attempted bribery. In Washington, UPI reports resuming U.S. Russia aviation talks may lead to Moscow New York flights by next spring with Pan Am and Aeroflot officials to meet.

Rhodes Leads In Troy County Poll For Governor Race

Troy Ohio poll of 300 Miami County residents shows Republican Gov. James A Rhodes with 43 percent. Democratic challenger Frazier Reams Jr. at 21.7 percent, 21.2 percent undecided, and 13.3 percent not voting.

Oberlin Review seeks funds for Viet Nam trip by reporter

The Oberlin College paper plans to ask the Student Senate to fund a reporter trip to the Viet Nam war zone at about 2000 dollars with part of the cost covered by selling dispatches to other colleges. Some students oppose, arguing bias and unfair portrayal of the war.

Government raises FHA VA mortgage rates to historic highs

The government moves to inject cash into the dollar poor money market and lifts the maximum rate for new FHA and VA mortgages from 5 3 4 percent to 6 percent. The change aims to free mortgage money for buyers, though a $16 000 30 year loan could rise by about $1 000 in cost. VA loans avoid a mortgage fee but require a 0 5 percent lump sum at closing.

Hurricane Inez veered to a westerly track toward Key Largo threatening 85 mph winds. The storm endangers 1.5 million in the Miami area as a disabled tanker with 38 crew is in the Gulf Stream and Coast Guard seeks it through 35 foot seas.

Manslaughter Trial Date Set For Greenwich Driver

Eugene R. White 18 of Greenwich faces a manslaughter trial in Huron County Common Pleas Court on October 26 for a collision that killed a New Haven family of four after four bicyclists were struck. White pleaded innocent at a Saturday hearing. Rita Shoulders 24 Mansfield and Carol King 20 Mansfield also pleaded innocent to grand larceny charges in a separate Huron County hearing. Judge Robert J. Vetter continued their bonds.

Center of Aree Center Delayed Opening To Oct 17

The Norwalk Community Center re opening is delayed at least two weeks due to installation work on a new game room ceiling. Falling lathe and plaster from the gym above has prompted maintenance crews and high school youths to clear the debris. A drop ceiling will be installed and director Austin Shadle expects reopening the week of Oct 17.
