President Nixon faces a midnight deadline to intervene in a railroad labor dispute that could trigger a national shutdown. Four shopcraft unions have set a 12:01 a.m. Saturday strike deadline to gain agreement with seven major railroads, while most other roads may shut down voluntarily if the selective strike begins.
North Vietnamese diplomats said a third American family group seeking news of missing relatives would be received Saturday at the Hanoi mission overseeing Vietnam peace talks. The six members would meet liaison officers in charge of such visits, marking another step in inquiries into whether missing servicemen are alive.
Hannah Elizabeth Crews, 73, of Thomasville North Carolina a Red Cross recreation aide died Thursday from head injuries after a jeep accident. She was the first female Red Cross employee to die while serving in Vietnam.
A UPI report states a nuclear device equal to over one million tons of TNT was detonated on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. The Nixon administration sent an 80 page welfare overhaul to Congress proposing work requirements for many recipients while maintaining food stamps. A minimum $90 monthly payment would apply for seniors and the disabled, and failure to register for or accept work training would cut off benefits.

James F. Bryan of Rowland Heights California walked into Huron County Jail at 11 p m carrying an American flag. He said he had removed the courthouse flag because rain made him think it should be taken down. Police had earlier spotted an unidentified man removing the flag. Bryan returned the flag to its pole.
In Bonn Willy Brandt won unanimous Social Democratic backing to form a coalition with the Free Democrats to topple Chancellor Kiesinger. Helmut Schmidt said 224 deputies approved the policy program with the FDP without abstentions or opposition while Walter Scheel and the FDP caucus debated the offer.
A group of seven Marshall University black students interrupted President Roland Nelson during a convocation to protest the absence of an Afro-American culture center. Nelson paused his address, acknowledged their reasons, and the walkout drew about 70 supporters.
Thomas Fredrick 21 of 224 Whittlesey Ave was admitted to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital with possible back injuries after an auto crash on U S 20 at 2 45 this morning. He swerved to avoid an animal and struck an electric pole damaging the right side of his 1960 Oldsmobile. He is listed in satisfactory condition.
Officials of the United Auto Workers criticized Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel for naming Cleveland and Toledo as major Lake Erie polluters. The union called his action high handed and uninformed and urged hearings be held everywhere before assigning blame.
Edward J. Still named operations manager of Fanny Farmer Candy Shops replacing James Hogan who resigned. Still has 27 years with the company and seven in Norwalk, assumes duties next week and serves on the City Council utility study committee and the Chamber of Commerce presidency. Hogan becomes president of House of Bauer in Lincoln Nebraska after more than 30 years with Fanny Farmer.
Beverly Hills California UPI Golda Meir states that the Soviet Union now desires peace in the Middle East because it fears losing more Russian tanks and planes to Israel if war erupts.
Sacramento Calif UPI Judge Earl Warren Jr drew sharp rebukes from Dist Atty John Price and Sheriff John Misterly for his conduct in a bottomless go go dancer case that ended with acquittals. Price called for a judge who understands the law while Misterly branded the court a three ring circus and accused Warren of pushing a directed verdict. Warren defended his oath to the constitution and said he aims to uphold it. The jurors had initially convicted two dancers of indecent exposure but acquitted them of lewd and dissolute conduct after his instruction to reconsider. Susanne Haines 22 and Sheila Brendenson 22 were spared further charges. Haines planned to resume nude dancing later and Brendenson said she is retired.
