Sgt. Alvin L. Smith Jr. of Naples Florida arrived at Travis Air Force Base California and told reporters there was no murder in the Green Beret case and he had touched off the controversy.
The Ohio Supreme Court dismissed the appeal of Carl Towner a delinquent teen who refused school hair length rules at North Olmsted High School. He had been labeled habitual truant after missing classes while refusing to trim his hair. In Middletown a man was charged after a three year old suffocated in an abandoned refrigerator due to a failing locking device. Marvin J Thacker’s door incident left the boy trapped. parents were away when it occurred.
In Sacramento California a mostly male jury acquitted two bottomless go go dancers of indecent exposure after a five week municipal court trial. Jurors deliberated 11 hours and the case moved from Judge Earl Warren Jr s court to two nightclubs and a movie theater for evidence gathering.
The Nixon administration studies loosening laws to treat marijuana users more as a medical issue than a criminal one. HEW officials say penalties would reflect the drug's dangers and shift toward treatment.
Funeral services pending for Henry Thompson known as Hammering Hawk a key member of the 1951 Giants miracle team. The former third baseman died of natural causes after a seizure in his home and an autopsy is planned. Thompson earlier played briefly for the 1947 Browns and joined the Giants with Monte Irvin in 1949 as early Black signees.

Norwalk plans a new rate schedule to fund water and sewer operations with higher charges. The city expects water revenue to rise from 168 500 this year to 343 990 in 1970 and sewer revenue from 90 248 to 195 500 next year. The plan aims to cover deficits, fund $1 million in water improvements, and add $250 000 to the sewer system amid meter upgrades and efficiency efforts.
Six ADC mothers met with county leaders including Commissioner Robertson and welfare director Walls to press a $75 per child winter aid and to force fathers to pay support. Walls warned of a $20,000 to $25,000 year end deficit, with the supplement adding about $30,000.
James A. Booth 23 of 15% Main St. Milan died Wednesday at University Hospital Columbus from injuries from a Sunday Marion County Fairgrounds race. Born May 19, 1946 in Norwalk he lived in the Milan area all his life. He is survived by his parents five brothers five sisters and a half sister. Funeral arrangements include rosary Friday and funeral Mass Saturday at St Anthony's with military graveside rites at Old Baptist Cemetery Berlin Heights.
A pair of powerful quakes near Santa Rosa California rattled the coast at 9 56 p m and 11 20 p m causing shattered glass and power outages. The University of California Seismology Station reported magnitudes of 5 6 and 5 5 with the first quake causing damage and residents noting up to 30 seconds of shaking. One man was seriously hurt by flying glass in Santa Rosa.
Six men were elected to the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for three year terms starting in January. In the Industrial division defendants include William Dauch James Seitz Mark Beeman and Fred Stein. The Retail and Professional divisions list Robert Allen and William Young. A separate report notes a hospital response after a mass minor injury incident.
