Walter Watroba died after an emergency leg amputation to free him from debris during a five alarm fire at Commonwealth Edison Fisk Station Chicago. The blaze collapsed a quarter mile of conveyor belt trapping him on the roof as firefighters battled freezing temperatures and low visibility. Dr. Joseph Cari performed the rooftop amputation using helicopter brought surgical tools before Watroba was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital. Electrical service was disrupted across an 18 block area and later restored to all but about 1000 customers.
