Inflation at 4.2 Percent Dips to Five-Year Low

inflation slowed to 4.2 percent between July and September, the second lowest in five years, while real GNP growth slowed to 3.8 percent in the third quarter, due to weaker consumer spending and higher imports. Fed chief Burns saw no need for an immediate tax cut, though he would reconsider if conditions weaken. Michigan economists Hymans and Shapiro forecast 4.3 percent growth in 1977 with a 13 billion dollar tax cut.
