Three tips from inflation fighter on April prices

Alfred Kahn, President Carter's inflation adviser, urges consumers to buy pork instead of beef as beef prices rose 4.1 percent in April while pork fell 1.7 percent. He also counsels using less gasoline amid a 6 percent April rise, and avoiding housing speculation as mortgage rates climbed 1.9 percent and prices overall rose 1.1 percent.

Explosive blast hits Shelby clothing store kills firefighters

In Shelby North Carolina a clothing store fire exploded injuring more than a dozen and killing at least five people most of them firefighters. Officials say natural gas may have triggered the blast and bricks and glass struck rescuers and bystanders as the blaze raged.

Disaster at O'Hare as DC-10 Falls Apart Killing 271

A DC-10 jet lost engine number one on takeoff from O'Hare and disintegrated in a massive fire near runway 32-R. All 271 aboard died, with debris scattering toward mobile home parks and oil tanks. Investigators, led by FAA and NTSB, secured the wreckage and recovered the black box as Red Cross teams prepared a makeshift morgue at the American Airlines hanger.

Suspect arraigned on drug charges in Huron County

Stephen Neil Sampsel a 26 year old Holiday Lakes man faced arraignment on drug trafficking charges after a Thursday night arrest following a secret grand jury indictment. He pleaded not guilty and is held on a 100000 cash bond. A second Friday search yielded three shotguns and a stolen VCR and a separate witness says a Detroit arrest involved explosives. Rhonda Bowman arraigned with Sampsel on aiding and abetting and remains jailed on 10000 cash or 20000 property bond. Pre trial dates set for Bowman May 31 and Sampsel June 25.

Norwalk Strawberry Festival weather winds down plans ahead

A Norwalk Nor'easter delayed festival activities with rain and cold. By Friday night most events were canceled or moved indoors to Norwalk High School. Forecasters expect clearing skies, warmer temps, and little rain, with weekend events including skates, parades, concerts, a car parade, and a disco show.
