West drought seen as test run for 1990 water year

UPI reports Jack Barnett of the Western State's Water Council warned that the 1977 drought foreshadows a national trend. He said demand will rise and many regions will face shortened water years by 1990, urging long term planning and sustained conservation. The remarks came at a National Conference on Water workshop.

Bright convoy fulfills last wish for Tommy Copley

In Greenfield Massachusetts a 150-vehicle caravan including six 18-wheelers escorted by CB radio fans from Connecticut New York and Vermont carried out the 11 year old cancer victim Tommy Copleys final wish. More than 350 friends gathered at Greenfield High School then moved quietly along Route 2 Mohawk Trail to Shelburne Falls funeral home to honor him with a silent wake.

Meyers elected president and COO of American Motors

Gerald C. Meyers, 49, was chosen as president and chief operating officer of American Motors Corp. He had served as executive vice president since November 1975 and succeeds William Luneburg, who retires at 65 after leading AMC since January 1967.

Eldridge Challenges Norwalk Tax Hike Backed by Voters

James Eldridge seeks petitions to suspend a quarter per cent tax increase approved by Norwalk City Council on May 17. If 352 signatures are gathered, the ordinance will be halted until a November vote. Eldridge's stance follows Norwalk voters’ 1976 four to one rejection of a larger income tax.
