The Norwalk Board of Education ratified a provisional salary schedule raising pay 2.54 percent starting July 1, contingent on the fate of a four mill operating levy on June 7. If the levy fails, salaries may be reopened or reduced and college reimbursement may end.
The flamboyant talk show host Lou Gordon died in his sleep Tuesday at his home in Bloomfield Hills Michigan. He was 60. Gordon’s WKBD TV program aired in eight cities and featured the Vietnam brainwash remark that affected George Romney’s 1968 campaign. A separate Ohio House bill proposes suspended sentences for certain crimes in exchange for restitution.
Former Attorney General John Mitchell and H R Haldeman ask the Supreme Court to delay the impact of its denial while seeking reconsideration of their Watergate cover-up convictions. Ehrlichman has begun his sentence.
A locomotive at 81 mph crashed into a 28 ton stainless steel lead cask at Sandia Laboratories test track. The cask was damaged but did not leak. engineers called it not a typical cross traffic wreck as the test continues to evaluate cask strength and scale model reliability.
The Senate passed a $5.6 billion annual food stamp overhaul extending the program for two years and making stamps free for qualified recipients. The change removes required cash contributions, potentially making 3 million more people eligible. Sen. Curtis’s bid to block it failed 64 to 31.
In Santa Monica UPI reports a camera in Roman Polanski's possession contained photos of a 13 year old girl nude or partially nude taken just before she alleges he drugged and raped her. One image shows the girl in a whirlpool with a champagne glass. Police say she told them Polanski gave her champagne to wash down Quaalude. Another photo from the day of the alleged rape shows her bare breasted.

Four South Moluccans moved to Assen near Bovensmilde as a deadline expires amid ongoing talks with gunmen holding about 165 hostages including 105 schoolchildren on a train and at a nearby school. Prime Minister Den Uyl says intensive contact is developing a basis for negotiation.
City Engineer James Widman says Memorial Reservoir sits 26.25 million gallons below full, with Upper and Lower Reservoirs full. Daily use currently about 2 million gallons, possible rise to 2.5 million in summer. Reservoirs total 617 million gallons when full. Projections for the next year and a half to come in 4–6 weeks.
Matt Pechauer, a Maplehurst School fifth grader, has delivered the Reflector on Spine Court, Spine Drive and Illiams Street since February. He saves earnings from the route to buy a 10 speed bicycle. His hobbies are bicycle riding and swimming. he is the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Pechauer of Indian Terrace.
A Fort Lauderdale bomb blast at Mackey International Airlines' regional office halted efforts to resume Cuba flights. Col. Joseph Mackey dropped plans to fly to Havana after the explosion, suspecting a bomb and citing threats from a group calling for Cuban people’s rights. An anonymous caller claimed responsibility for multiple bombs at Mackey offices.
The United States assures President Park Chung-hee that withdrawing 33,000 U.S. ground troops in four to five years will not disturb Korea’s stability. Gen. George Brown and Philip Habib arrive in Seoul to discuss milestones and a gradual plan while supporting a Korean military buildup commensurate with the pullout.
Census estimates show Norwalk up 3.7 percent to 13 876 while Willard falls 1 percent to 4 961. Greenwich leads growth at 15.6 percent. Milan up 5.5 percent and Berlin Heights 1.9 percent. Per capita incomes vary from Wakeman 5381 to Greenwich 3377 in the county.
