Gov Wallace appeals to pro Wallace Democrats to seek delegate seats at December Kansas City convention to showcase potential presidential strength. He says he may attend the Dec charter meeting as a delegate. Elks vote to sell golf club.
The Huron County Board of Mental Health and Retardation asks for a half mill levy on the November ballot to fund operations and raise about $98 000 yearly. It also seeks larger quarters at 86 West Main Street with plans to rent space, as current facilities are crowded and unable to add staff or host groups.
Common Pleas Court Judge finds television actor Mel Stewart innocent of rape involving a 16 year old girl met at Karamu House. He waived the right to a jury trial. Belfast leaders ease tense general strike with British troops and concessions avoiding disaster as UWC relaxes supply ban.
David Frank Kamaiko, 22, described as a good boy, hijacked a helicopter at gunpoint and forced the pilot to fly to the Pan Am building. On the roof he demanded a $2 million ransom delivered by a bikini-clad girl. Police and FBI captured him after the pilot fled and a second hostage overpowered him. He reportedly said the ransom was to buy guns for Israel.
A nationwide Harris survey taken May 7 and 8 shows Nixon at 32 percent positive on job performance, a one point rise from March and April despite the release of Watergate transcripts. The poll was conducted one week after transcripts of taped conversations with top aides were made public.

Floyd Mills, 61, freed after 35 years in Oklahoma State Penitentiary without trial for a murder he did not commit. Arrested near the victim, beaten into a confession, he spent time on a poultry farm and was released January 30 after appeals court orders. Mills seeks work and to rejoin society, lamenting loss of wife and daughter.
Milan Marsh defeated Frank King by a 3 2 margin for president of the Ohio AFL-CIO at the biennial convention in Cleveland. Unofficial returns gave Marsh 3 263 votes to 1 963 for King. official results were due. Marsh and Warren Smith will lead the organization for four years amid opposition to King over relations with Gov. Gilligan.
Delegates at the National Conference on Social Welfare heard three young homosexuals describe the gay world and urge broader acceptance. They called for gay speakers in schools, foster parent licensing for gays, and understanding loneliness.
Duke Ellington, famed composer and pianist behind Mood Indigo, dies at 3 10 a m in New York at age 75 from lung cancer with pneumonia. Family and physicians report he had cancer in both lungs and pneumonia, after hospital treatment since late March.
The film American Graffiti set in 1962 will run at the Towne and Country Theatre through June 6 with showings at 8 p.m. daily.
