Police stormed a bank after a day-long siege and captured a Vietnamese gunman who held 11 hostages. Two hostages were injured mildly during the standoff as the gunman threatened four victims before fleeing massed by passengers.
Coroner reports Donald DeFreeze known as Cinque died by his own hand amid SLA bodies in the blaze. FBI says Patricia Hearst and two SLA members Emily and William Harris may have fled the area, with search continuing in and around Los Angeles.
The Ohio Department of Liquor Control refused to renew licenses at six Sportservice Inc. operated sites after citing Emprise Corp. federal gambling loan conviction. The action affects Cleveland Arena Thistledown Toledo arena Cincinnati Gardens River Downs and Riverfront. Appeals grant 30 days with bars allowed to operate pending case.
In Erie Pennsylvania a 23 year old Russian seaman Ivan Khonenki. the first Soviet sailor known to seek asylum in the United States. left a Soviet freighter during a party then flagged down a citizen to request asylum. immigration officials confirmed the dramatic departure from the Shura Kober with 36 other crewmen. In Key Biscayne Florida President Nixon prepared a national radio address on the anti inflation program and announced Kenneth Rush as the new White House chief economic coordinator to be broadcast from his Florida villa on Memorial Day.
Annapolis authorities investigate an enlisted quartermaster who allegedly supplied about one sixth of the sophomore class with navigation exam questions. The May 29 test was declared compromised after as many as 150 of 900 sophomores might have accessed the questions beforehand. A faculty source said the quartermaster “just likes to see the guys pass.”

The Diocese of Toledo requests a Sisters of Notre Dame nun to lead Norwalk St Paul High School. Rev. Gerald Stein announced Father Bodart will step down after 13 years as associate pastor and nine as principal. Sister Mary Arthur agreed to appoint a qualified nun, with Roger Holman named associate principal and athletic director.
A Wakeman woman, Virginia L. Campbell 41, died on U S 250 south of Sandusky in a two car crash. Virgil R. Finley 44 of Sandusky was injured and in guarded condition. Beverly Bechstein 28 of Wellington, a passenger, was treated at Sandusky Memorial Hospital.
