Huron County to receive state road repair funds in 1979 split

Gov. Rhodes announced a second 1979 distribution of vehicle license tax revenues totaling 150,865 for Huron County and its towns to aid road and bridge repairs. The payout follows a 149,864 earlier installment, part of about 38 million for all 88 counties, with funds directed to counties and townships via permissive tax and road funds.

High speed chase over gas bill ends in ditch

A Moline woman Juanita Peterson 19 led a 12-car pursuit across 20 miles after an attendant tried to collect 11.83 for fuel. She was captured when her car rammed into a ditch following the chase that began at the North Star gas station.

Courts say women can sue colleges over sex discrimination

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Education Amendments of 1972 allow an individual to sue federally funded colleges for sex discrimination. Justice Stevens wrote for the majority, reversing the 7th Circuit. Dissenters argued the law relies on government enforcement only.

William Roberts named St. Paul football coach

William D. Roberts was hired as head football coach of St. Paul, succeeding Dick Alge. A Sandusky native and Ashland College alum, he plans rebuilding the Flyers with a 5-0 defense, an I formation offense, and a focus on a strong kicking game. He will retain current assistants and promotes positive mental attitude.

Accidental shooting kills Wakeman teen

Wakeman 16 year old Mark A. Smith died after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound with a .22 rifle near his home. Michael Smith handed him an apparently unloaded gun. the trigger was pulled while Mark rested his chin on the rifle. The death was ruled accidental and related to personal safety. Burial plans set in Clarksfield Cemetery with funeral at First Baptist Church New London.

Huron judge cites court filings to push for a second judgeship

Ohio Supreme Court data show Huron County Common Pleas Court filed 270 cases in July through September 1978, the highest among one-judge courts. Domestic relations accounted for 118 cases, with backlog 489 at start and 504 pending by end of September, indicating greater litigation activity than neighboring counties.
