Davis-Besse flaw left emergency pumps inoperative
The Davis Besse nuclear plant near Port Clinton suffered a previously undetected flaw in early January, rendering pumps for the emergency cooling system inoperable from January 3 to January 5. The issue was flagged at a March 12 meeting with Toledo Edison staff, and a report to the NRC by Superintendent Terry D. Murray acknowledged the problem.

Willard Junior High teacher injured in Columbus crash
Willard Junior High School reading teacher Wesley DeVene, 47, was critically injured Friday when struck by a car in Columbus during an Ohio Education Association convention. He was thrown into the Scioto River amid a two car crash at West Broad and Civic Center, saved by bystanders and an FBI agent, as another driver fled the scene. DeVene remained in poor condition at Grant Hospital with multiple injuries. Four teachers including Mitchell Truesdale and two others were hospitalized with less serious injuries. DeVene taught fifth and sixth grade reading and related subjects at Willard Junior High and attended as a local delegate.
