Two crewmen recount Lyndon B. Johnson insisted on flying a perilous South Pacific bombing mission. They call him naive for wanting to join, noting there were no milk runs as Japanese Zeroes closed in and survivors were unlikely if shot down.
About 7,000 people visited the annual Boy Scout Show at the Huron County Fair grounds where over 30 scout units displayed 55 skills demonstrations. Top displays earned 23 blue ribbons and 18 red ribbons. Five units camped Friday night and eight Saturday night. In Washington, Secretary of State Dean Rusk defended U.S. role in Southeast Asia before a Senate hearing, asserting presidential authority to deploy forces without a war declaration, while Sen. Morse and Sen. Lausche clashed over his arguments.
Tokyo heard a Communist China blast described as its third nuclear test, with the 4 p.m. Monday detonation following October 1964 and May 1965 events. In Ohio and Pennsylvania a joint liquor raid led to more than 100 cases dumped into a reservoir as minors were targeted.
An 18 year old driver backed up to avoid a rolling driverless car carrying four children age two to seven. The two vehicles sustained moderate damage. Police traced involvement to Freda V O Dell and other minor incidents were reported in the area on Benedict Avenue and nearby streets.
Ohio Attorney General William B. Saxbe will hold a listening session and public meeting in Norwalk at 4 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office in the Huron County Bank building. Sheriff John Borgia invited the public to attend and discuss any matter pertaining to the attorney general’s office, following a crime clinic in Tiffin he is sponsoring for law enforcement officers across ten counties.
The Centerton Tavern near Willard was entered again after closing on Friday night in a rash of break-ins. Entry by removing a door allowed thieves to steal six quart wine bottles four quart screwdrivers gum soft drinks and cigarettes from a cigarette machine. A pool table and juke box were pried open with change taken.
Norwalk firefighters responded to a wood working shop at 2 Gibbs Ave the home of Charles Burdue Saturday night. The blaze was blamed on sparks from metal being saved. Building damage was estimated at 450 dollars.
Area men Ross and Hileman were named Saturday to 3-year EHOVE Board terms by the Huron County School Board. Erie County panel added Seibert and Kuns. Norwalk and Ottawa County selections to follow. Organizational meeting set for 7:30 p.m. May 16 in Sandusky.
Clarence C. Adams, a former prisoner of war who reportedly made anti American broadcasts for North Vietnam, was expected to cross the Chinese border Tuesday en route home. American and Red Cross officials had waited at the bridge between Hong Kong and Communist China since Sunday for his return after a dozen years in captivity.
UPI reports U S Army planes released 7200 pounds of nausea gas on a Viet Cong jungle headquarters in War Zone C near the Cambodian border. The strike cleared the way for about 2500 gas masked infantrymen to advance, advancing through terrain so thick the GI's must machete every foot of the way.
Buddhist leaders in Saigon press Thich Tri Quang to come back immediately. Quang, based in Hue, led anti government riots that prompted Ky and the junta to pledge free elections.
