Eighty nine youngsters aged nine to twelve auditioned Thursday for spots on the Lefty Grove teams in Norwalk. Officials face a shortage of openings, with a new team possible if a sponsor and manager can be found.
The World Journal Tribune announced it will stop publication with today’s issue. Formed in 1966 from the merger of three New York papers, it began in September after a strike delayed its start.
Partly cloudy and cool through Saturday with a chance of scattered showers tonight and highs in the 50s. A 24 hour precipitation tally ends at 8 p.m. Thursday shows none. Leonard W. Fowler 42 of Clarksburg WV and Madelle Russell 76 of Milan are listed in deaths.
In Celeryville on a Thursday afternoon two year old Joanie Van Zoest slipped into a six foot ditch near Ohio 194. Neighbor Harold Danhoff pulled her from the water and sped her to Willard Hospital where she was revived and listed in fair condition the next morning.
U S Marines completed the conquest of Hill 881 North today and joined in a climactic battle. Hanoi radio reported seven American planes shot down in a raid on the capital and its industrial suburbs with pilots captured. The broadcast said U S planes strafed and bombed Hanoi centers and two heavily populated suburbs.
William Berry was elected president of the Norwalk Jaycees. He will serve two years and oversee officers Jerry Stoll Dick Powel Jerry Walder and Dave Mea chen with directors Jim Ott and Tom Thaxon. Installations set for July 1 after the banquet.
The Huron County Board of Health will consider a housing code within months after a Toledo conference. Clarence Ellett says a definite proposal may reach the June or July meetings, with past delays linked to a resignation and concerns over overly detailed rules. The board also approved taking over the draft health referral program for the City of Bellevue.
Huron County prosecutors plan to interview witnesses as they decide on retrying Leroy Oney after the Ohio Supreme Court ordered a new trial. Oney, convicted of incest in 1964, is serving a one to ten year term in Marion Prison. His attorney, Donald Derby, argued constitutional rights were violated by lack of a clearly paid defense attorney.
Karl Brooks Jr a former Norwalk pilot in critical condition since April 16 when his plane crashed near Joshua Tree California has regained consciousness and been moved to Riverside General Hospital where he is improving Relatives in Norwalk learned this week that Brooks 32 formerly of Norwalk High School grad now lives elsewhere
The Operating Engineers Union strike against the Ohio Contractors Association could postpone Norwalk bypass opening beyond the planned Oct 31 deadline. Norwalk builder A J Baltes Inc. says progress has been close to schedule but warns a prolonged strike may push the opening into next year. Baltes serves on the Ohio Contractors negotiation team.
Nicholas Gallo, school psychologist for Norwalk City Schools for two years, resigns to become pupil personnel supervisor in Lorain County. He will supervise three psychologists and interns, serving about 20 000 students, and plans further study toward a doctorate.
The Southwestern District of the Firelands Area Council hosts a Scout Expo at the Huron County Fair grounds this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Exhibits come from local scouts and troops in Huron County. Family tickets are one dollar.
