Paint spill harms Norwalk sewage plant efficiency

The 3000 gallons of paint dumped into Norwalk sewers on April 22 killed 30 to 40 percent of wastewater digesting bacteria, cutting treatment efficiency from 90–95 percent to about 85 percent. Water Superintendent Charles Sweet warned the biological oxygen demand is twice the Ohio EPA limit, reducing dissolved oxygen and risking wildlife.
