City Seeks State Funds for Juvenile Officer Position

Norwalk applies for state support under a new program to add a full time juvenile officer. If approved, Ptl. John Short would become the officer, with the city adding a new regular officer to replace him. The grant covers up to 3000 dollars annually for up to 20 officers, with 20 slots contested statewide.

Coast Guard helicopter saves sailor at Stinson Beach

A Coast Guard helicopter rescued a weekend sailor and his 12-foot boat off Stinson Beach California. The man clung to the overturned craft in deep water for 45 minutes before the rotor wash pushed him and the boat to the sandy shore.

U S Cavalry Ambushed by Hanoi Tank Column West of Hue

North Vietnamese tanks 15 miles into South Vietnam ambushed a U S air cavalry column 20 miles west of Hue. U S units reported moderate losses as they fought back under heavy sniper fire and pulled free. In Saigon area, U S troops killed 114 guerrillas and gunships destroyed 165 Viet Cong sampans attempting to move arms.

Dam Break Floods Town in Massachusetts

A 10 foot flood crest from a broken dam hit East Lee Massachusetts flooding Route 20 and destroying homes. One man is dead a 60 year old widow is missing and officials fear the toll will rise. Dam failure involved a 40 foot breach of the earth dam confining Lake Lee.

Man Cited In 63 On Trial In Huron County

Harold Oney of Shiloh faced a drunken driving case in Huron County Common Pleas Court stemming from his April 15 1963 arrest by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The trial proceeded after multiple continuances requested by former counsel and due to the defendant’s health with new attorney Paul Miller for the defense and Ronald Freeman presenting the state case.

Norwalk Seeks Inclusion in Huron County Housing Authority

Norwalk applies for admission to the Huron County Metropolitan Housing Authority. Ralph Marks says the housing board will consider the request Thursday night and file with the State Housing Board in Columbus for approval. The Authority now includes Willard and New London. Norwalk council approved the resolution on March 5.
