Nationwide Insurance chief cites fragile cars and rising costs

Dean W. Jeffers said Nationwide has not earned an auto insurance operating profit since 1962 due to fragile cars on flimsy bumpers and higher repair and medical costs. He noted a 1970 net earnings of 24 million mainly from investments and a 2.1 million operating loss in auto and fire businesses.

Reds Step Up Pressure In Vietnam

In Saigon the South Vietnamese incursion into Laos neared completion with withdrawal possible by Wednesday as Communist forces pressed inside South Vietnam. Attacks hit Khe Sanh and ambushed a U.S. armored column three times, while mortars at Khe Sanh and sapper attacks damaged helicopters. One American killed and four wounded as a lead tank was blown by a mine during a seven mile road dash along Route 9 amid burned armor.

Norwalk Bus and Truck Collision Near East Main

A Norwalk city school bus and a van truck collided at East Main Street and Linwood Avenue after noon. No injuries were reported. Police investigated while a home fire on Milan Avenue tied to a missing pickup and a break-in nearby were being explored.

At Fort Benning the six officer jury continues its seventh day of deliberation in the Calley court martial. They reread the testimony of Durst the last of four key government witnesses and prepared for another week of proceedings while seeking someone to manage monthly pay checks.

Cleveland banks cut prime and savings rates signals wider cuts

Cleveland Trust Co. cut its prime rate from 5 percent and savings passbook rate from 4 percent to 4 percent effective April 1. Society National Bank matched the cuts. Investment passbooks fall to 4 percent while one year income accounts earn 5 percent and two year income accounts earn 5 1/4 percent.

Nixon: Laos invasion not a failure but a milestone

President Nixon told ABC that the Laos campaign shows South Vietnam can fight well and has passed a milestone in taking over fighting. He predicted continued U.S. withdrawals at 12,500 monthly and said full impact would be known only long term. He noted no decision on 1972 and called the effort neither great nor a failure.

Railpax routes omit Cleveland in five Ohio city plan

The National Rail passenger plan would serve five Ohio cities but bypass Cleveland, prompting objections from Sen Taft and Cleveland officials. Trio Chooses Wrong Tank Gets Kerosene

Three Monroeville youths admitted taking kerosene from a near by house thinking it was gasoline. A man gave them a ride after their car stalled and he reported the license plate. Deputy Tappel said the incident was turned over to Juvenile Court and the youths were released to their parents.
