In Quincy, a car driven by 17 year old Gregory Ameida tore up the Casagrande lawn and home after careening off a curve. A previous hit last month toppled a telephone pole and a year ago another vehicle pierced the front yard. The Casagrandes face ongoing risk and repairs.
Four Ohio men died in northeast river accidents Sunday while canoeing and rafting. In Olmstead Falls, only two of five survived a rocky Rocky River raft overturn. Roger Meyer and Mark Brown survived, others unnamed. In Painesville a 16 foot canoe capsized on the Grand River after hitting ice, killing Michael Pringle as Karen Pringle and Wayne Henderson reached shore. Pringle’s body was later recovered. In Columbus a Dispatch report notes Anthony Celebrezze Jr the secretary of state faced criticism over hiring friends and relatives, citing daughters of politicians among his staff.
Sandusky Ohio Cedar Point opens its 11th season May 12 with three new rides. A Wave Swinger circular ride with 48 swings will simulate surfing. The Wave Swinger is the parks 57th ride and part of the new Midway alongside two new roller coasters.
Lows tonight in mid 20s and Tuesday highs in upper 30s with a 20 percent precip chance tomorrow. Sunday temps 65 to 35 with trace precipitation. Marriage license filed for Dennis L Smith and Taren S Luginbuhl. Births include a Monroeville boy and two girls. In Wakeman area 11-year-old Rachelle Krupp delivers papers and collects from 46 customers on her Reflector route. She keeps track of money and feels responsible ensuring daily delivery. She follows two brothers Rory and Rodney who became Reflector carriers in December.
Inventor Ira T. Lapides from Gatlinburg promotes Gatlinburger Smokies as 100 percent tobacco with no additives and claims they are less harmful than major brands due to absence of chemical additives. The Virginia manufactured cigarettes cost $5 per carton of 200 with .9 nicotine and .15 tar. Menthol version uses organic eucalyptus derived menthol.
Carter presents revised proposals to Begin describing them as significantly different from earlier plans. Begin plans briefings with Congress as Sadat hints at a major statement. UPI report notes cautious U S response and warnings from Percy and Javits about crisis point and potential concessions.
Iran reopened oil production after 69 days sending 230000 tons to a Japan bound supertanker. Seven ousted royal regime figures were executed, including four generals, two SAVAK officials, and a former parliament member, as Bazargan's government asserted control amid Mossadegh anniversary tributes.
China announces withdrawal of frontier troops to Chinese soil after a self defense offensive against Vietnam from Feb. 17. Hanoi denies pullout and vows continued fighting while Beijing warns against new incursions and calls for peaceful border talks. Lang Son victory cited as key milestone in defense strategy.
JERUSALEM UPI The Israeli Cabinet approved two proposals by Prime Minister Begin to break the deadlock in Egyptian Israeli peace treaty talks. The cabinet did not approve the two American suggestions from President Carter. Deputy PM Yigael Yadin announced the decision after a five and a half hour session. The communique said the cabinet approved Begin's suggestions and not the American recommendations.
