Vice President Hubert Humphrey appears moved during a standing ovation at the dedication of the Hubert Humphrey Bridge in Cocoa Florida. He helped mobilize political support to connect the mainland and the cape.
Civil rights advocates in the Senate push to gain four more votes to end debate and vote on a two part open housing package. If not secured by Monday the issue may die in the election year Congress. The chamber again refused cloture on Friday, delaying progress toward final passage.
Joseph Hurst 23 a former Iowa State University basketball player was sentenced to death in the electric chair for the May 24 1967 killing of Patrolman Herman Stallworth 37 after he was stopped for a traffic violation. He compared himself to Jesus Christ saying like Christ a black man he stands before Pontius Pilate and you find no guilt in me.

Strikes by teachers in San Francisco Pittsburgh and Florida widen an education crisis. San Francisco mediation begins today to end the first city strike as 1 500 teachers walk out and classes are disrupted. Pittsburgh seeks hefty fines for the unions while Florida rejects a statewide settlement.
Mrs. James Williams, 55, of 36 North Foster Street, remained in satisfactory condition at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after a pole fell from a car backing out of a parking space near 38 West Main Street. Driver Betty Gregg, 40, Greenwich, was cited for reckless operation after her vehicle backed into a tree and light pole at 4 44 p.m. The incident left Williams walking on West Monroe Street with possible back injuries.
Dr. Richard Duffes was dismissed as director of the Huron County Guidance Center after a secret board meeting. The board cited ineffectual leadership and referrals shortfalls from courts, schools, doctors, and welfare agencies, announcing the termination as of March 1 and naming Mrs. Jean Evans acting director.
Two men from Norwalk and Virginia were arrested within 24 hours of an 8000 dollar robbery at Lasch Furniture and TV Store. Police say 1178 dollars in cash and 7188 in checks were taken, with 900 dollars found on a suspect. The burglars entered through an upstairs window.
