Oldest churches and German roots mark St Sebastian’s Bismark
Henry Timmann recounts St Sebastian’s Church in Bismark as Huron County’s second oldest Catholic building. He traces German settlers from Bavaria arriving before 1830, the Ruffing family voyage, parish founding in 1836, log church fire, and the 1857 main brick church with later 1923 remodeling. The article notes early schooling, land gifts, and the area’s naming lore linked to Bismarck.
