Grave Uncovered in Rowe Slaying Near Tucson

In Tucson the desert grave of 15 year old Aileen Rowe was found after Charles Schmid, age 24, led authorities to the site. Schmid pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years to life. Detectives had hunted the Tuscan area since Schmid’s 1965 arrest on three murder charges for the 1964 disappearance.

Paratroopers Repel North Vietnamese Assault in Central Highlands

In a brutal hand to hand fight 173rd Airborne Brigade paratroopers repelled a North Vietnamese attack near the Central Highlands. Officials estimated up to 450 enemy dead while 75 Americans were killed and 25 wounded. Helicopters could not reach the wounded for hours.

Johnson cites hope from Kosygin talks despite unresolved differences

President Johnson said the Glassboro summit may improve mutual understanding but not guarantee easing U.S. Soviet tensions. Operators Approve Five-Year Highway Contract

Labor peace between Ohio highway contractors and Operating Engineers Local 18 appears assured for five years after an overwhelmingly pro contract mail ballot. 11,000 engineers returned to work June 17 after a May 3 strike halting 375 projects valued at 389 million dollars and affecting 100,000 workers. The contract raises wages to 87 percent by expiration. 5,942 of 7,411 ballots favored, 1,456 opposed. John Possehl announced the results at Local 18 headquarters in Cleveland.
